So we had a storm a few weeks back with some random lightning, so being the genius I am, I covered my camera with a plastic bag and ran outside to take pictures with the tripod.

it seems like it was to bright for the camera to focus.

I had it on manual, but focusing at a dark sky (~10PM) is near impossible :P

Better than I can describe it.

I want to add though since it's pretty difficult to focus on the sky, which in itself is infinite... set your lens to focus at infinity. The lightning is going to be pretty goddamn far away from you (I hope) so it should be in focus.

Also, if you can shoot in RAW.
I only play paintball so I can tell dirty jokes.

1.Set aperture to highest number possible. iso to 100.
2.Set shutter to 30 sec
3. set timer so it goes after 10 seconds (prevents shake)
4. press button, walk away.
5. MAGIC HAPPENS

Tripod and a remote shutter release are my tools that I use for lightning. Lightning is VERY bright on a dark background. It's far enough away to use low aperture numbers with your focus point set to infinity. I findit useful to set my white balance to tungsten.

Nice shots!

Lightning is a rarity out here so I probably won't be getting very many shots.

There is a great point on a hill were you can see for miles... Would that be the best place to be to shoot?

Best place is going to be wherever the lightning is without the rain. Here is Oklahoma that's either right in front of a wall cloud that's about to hit the warm gulf air and expand or, if your really lucky, watching it pass you by without dropping buckets of water on you.
