the screws holding the dovetail asa on my gen 3 timmy are pretty much rusted on, anyone have advice for getting them off? not a huge fan of using heat in this situation to help it out because i'm lazy and don't want to take out all the nearby internals, and because i'm not sure how much it would actually help.

ps. this is what me and the screws did to a new exalt allen key

I'm not sure if it'll work but try maybe wd-40 or another type off bolt loosening lubricant. It usually works on rusted screws

Liquid Wrench or other rust penetrating spray could help. Just be careful, not sure what they can do to your electronics.

There is some pink goo stuff by the car Bondo in Walmart that works wonders on rust a drop of that in the screw head and if you can get it in the other side of the screw hole will get rid of enough rust to maybe grab the screw better or loosen the area around the screw.

Pic? I personally love using heat because I have an assortment of blowtorches... Anyways I would say that getting a tiny pen torch and getting the screw red hot is the only way to go if penetrating lube doesn't work.

Then yeah, penetrating oil then Heat that sucker up. I wouldn't bother trying anything else for fear of stripping the screws out even more than they are already.

Btw a pen torch should be <$10 if you don't have one handy.

Try soaking it in wd40 for awhile couple hours to let it work its way through the screw then use the hex key and a hammer and tap on it a little not hard, just right. That should loosen the rust.

the very first thing I do, is put an allen key into the hole, and tap it a few times with a hammer

This "unseats" the screw from any locktite and just shakes it loose

Then attempt to unscrew it. This tends to shake the screws loose, and it also seats the allen key into the socket firmly.

But, sometimes screws are just so difficult to remove because of red locktite, or they are fused because of heat, that other methods such as a screw extractor are needed.

Another tip is to heat the metal with a heat gun. You can find them at Home Depot for about $20 in the paint department. Heating the metal can cause it to expand/loosen up just enough to get the screw out

Exalt allen keys are horrible i have them and they rounded off quickly. but I guess just follow mikes advice, he has been playing for awhile already.
