depending on the size of the paint at your field that could be normal, or there could be a micro leak in the valve. I'd just dump a ton of oil down the ASA and dry fire it a couple times to recoat the seals. The Co2 leaking when you unscrew it is the volume just the extra volume from the expansion chamber venting, nothing wrong there.

OK he is right about the expansion chamber venting thats why you are losing Co2 when you unthread the tank. BUT PLEASE DO NOT PUT OIL ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR ASA OR TANK!!!!!!!!!!! that is a problem and sometime serious mistake! How much co2 you get out of a tank all depends of its temperature. The colder it is the less shots you will get out of your marker and the warmer it is the more you will get.

Necropost,
but anyway, oil is fine on co2 tanks and in non solenoid based guns. There is a safety issue when oil gets in the fill nipple of HPA tanks, but the OP specifically stated he was using Co2. Also on some guns that use solenoids oil will gum up the solenoid causing the marker to not function, but this is a non issue with 98 customs which are just inline blow backs.
Long story short, oil in this situation is fine.

I understand hes not using HPA but its good practice especially for newer players to disassemble their markers to not only learn how to clean their markers but to properly lube them instead of shortcuts. also for tippmanns we have issues with people putting oil in the power tubes it causes problems with seal on the powertube we dont suggest it. We also dont recommend telling players to put oil near tanks because its bad habit when they get HPA tanks and thats where to oil comes in. Bottom line is that the oil will be ok but we do not recommend doing so. Shortcuts instead of cleaning cause more problems then they fix

This is not a shortcut, it is how it was done for many years. My automags today, running HPA, still gets 5 drops of gold cup down the asa before I air if up every day I play, as per manufacturer recommendation.
