Used a etek ego for a few points and it was decent, I mean if you can get a used ego or older etek cheaper than a used etek 3 you can bank the money saved

Get the axe. Axe is super smooth and reliable like the etek but the etek is too kicky and loud for me.

when it comes to back ups i like to have something that shoots similar to my primary... so, if i am shooting a stacked tube poppet, i will have another stacked tube poppet as my back up... when i had my vice, i used a nexus ego6 as a back up... with my cockers, i always have another similarly spec'd out e-cocker as my back up.... right now, i've got 2 pumps, and 2 vics... incase one goes down for whatever reason, i've got a second one i can pull parts off of or use as a back up...

by having a gun that shoots and feels similarly then you dont have to adjust your play for the new gun... running and gunning, snapping, etc will all feel natural if the guns you shoot all have the same feel and shot characteristics.

$500 get's you a lot these days. My personal recommendations would be:

2011 G6R: because they are incredibly smooth and great scenario marker (if you play the occasional one) when you want the efficiency.
Empire Axe: They are work horses. Plain and simple. No point getting the Axe Pro when you can pick up a used Axe for half the price.
Etek 3: Not much different from the Etek 3 to the Etek 4, might as well save some cash. Is loud as hell but it'll serve it's purpose.
Bob Long Vice: You can find some awesome upped ones on the BST in your price range.
E-Blade Karnivor: If you can find one with a PE E-Blade then jump on that deal. Fun as hell to shoot, is tournament ready, and it's a beautiful peace of work

I totally forgot about the g6r. I love g6rs.
But you have to maintain bob long markers. Specially with the pressures.

Right now I think I'm just getting a regular axe. Save some money

if you want reliability, you cannot go wrong with an Eclipse Etek. I have personally owned the Etek 2 and the Etek 3, and I loved them both. Smooth and too easy to maintain.

Etek3 is solid. Probably the most reliable but it doesn't feel good in my hands

how about a pnuemag? seriously very walkable and mags just don't break. period. end of story... and if you look in the psp rule book if you shoot a mechanical style gun you're not limited to the BPS cap.
really tho you gotta go with a gun that fits your hands and your budget... can never go wrong with an axe though

i've got friends that have pneumags... some of them are well known for their mags... they do break down and they do require a bit of attention... a guy on my former team had a custom pneumag built by one of the guys at AO/BEO and it just never worked right... first we thoght it was the tickler LPR, but that wasnt the issue... then we thought it was the valve pin was out of spec... it was, but it didnt solve anything... then we though it was the mech 3 way valve for the trigger... it wasnt... no matter what was done to that mag, or what valve was put in it, it just didnt work...

get whatever back up gun you feel works for you... but getting a gun that closely resembles your primary will make switching between the guns easier... its why i am looking to pick up another e-cocker or 2... and do away wiht my victories... all great guns... but i shoot mostly pump these days, and if i switch to an electro for whatever reason i want to switch to one that has a similar weight and feel as my mini orry pump

well there are lemons, i'll agree with that, but its one of those that 99.99% of them work, and very rarely break. i guess part of my mentality is that if i'm carrying a backup then i want to have the confidence that it's going to work when i pick it up (or be a very quick fix) part of the reason i carry either my GX-3 or mag to every tourney/recball day i go to...

as far as getting one that feels like your other guns, i do agree with that, least wise one that your comfortable with, i mean the shocker doesn't feel like the gx necessarily but i'm comfortable with either one... thats just me personally i suppose.

How about you just get a legend. Not like you have to lube the damn thing anyways.

Stop worrying about how you look, and start worrying about how you play. Get out on the field and play paintball the best you can, not stand at home in front of a mirror trying to figure out if your jersey matches your eyes.

I would say a Used Axe. You can get one in perfect condition for $325. Saves you some money and you would still get a reliable, great little gun.
