Hey guys,
This is the V2.0 of the computer geek club originally posted by Aresfied (RIP), sadly, he was Perma-banded in April.
So, in honor of him, here is the original OP

View Postaresfiend, on 31 December 2011 - 08:36 PM, said:

This club is for those who are truly computer geeks. I don't want anybody that can just build a computer, I mean serious shit. I mean people who know the basics of true computer geekiness and not just assembly and following the lines for installation. I mean the people who are cable and filesystem management attemptees at the least.

How to become a member, I would have you take a picture of you computer but that would be too easy. It's as simple as saying your favorite programming language or cable management technique.

You can get in with basic OS knowledge as is seen but I don't necessarily care if you have the most thought out computer, if you feel comfortable moving around command prompt more than your own skin then I don't care who you are, you are welcome!
Spoiler

EDIT: Damnit.. I forgot my acceptance speech, HTML and zip ties. Thank you!

Now, the original OP still stands, this club will be geared towards higher level geeks, containing high level content.

But, this club will be open to the "less" "geeky" public. As a place for discussion and learning. If your new to computers, wanting to learn, or just plain want some quick help, come by!

Ways to apply, you can eiter: type favorite computer brands and why (in a list), favorite programming, favorite cable tie
method.

Copied from old thread...

So, I want to get more into programming (I'm already a robotics and hardware nerd).

I hate learning out of books, I'm a much more hands on guy.

Any suggestions for ways to learn/languages?

The stares are priceless and after the first game or so you get to see the grins from the ref and players who know....priceless.

What do you want to learn?
I'm learning Jaca script ATM.
My evolution to programming was: Python:

Pythons is an easy language made to help non-programming types learn and get the feel/basics. You can YouTube many great tutorials, and Practise by downloading the python program from thier website. It pretty easy to learn, but is also powerful.

Then I learned: HTML

HTML, I one of the easiest languages, but one of the post significant, as it powers the whole web. You can practice with a new note pad (the application, not a physical one lol) and some online resources. Sorry, but you'll have to read for this one. Thier are some decent HTML tuts, but none that I have liked very much. google: "learn HTML programming" and stuff around that and you'll get multiple website that have to the point info, that's also relevant.

Finally, I'm in the process of learning Java Script:
Java script is a very very powerful script. You know RuneScape? Yep, that's powered by Java script. The website I'm using is called Code Academy. What you do is make an account, and then proced to go threw all the lessons and activities. It's really fun IMO, but you just need time to do it. They also have a forum to ask questions about code problems (if you cant get it to work) and stuff, plus you can post the coding in here for help too.
The other option that's recommended is code year. Yep, same people, except for this; every Monday of every week, you get emailed a lesson/activity/problem. This whole thing is that after the 52 consecutive weeks of programming, you'll have it down pat.
Most people say it takes a year to be fluent in a certain language, which is true, so pick one and go!

Signed up for code year, I like it so far.

I had previously learned some Python from a book, it bored me though (mostly because of the book lol).

IMO, programming is one of those things that, either you enjoy doing it, and want to learn more, or you loathe it, and learning it is just a struggle. I for one have a hard time learning it. Posted Image

I think that for me, it'll be one of those things that comes naturally - the hardest part is finding a way that keeps programming fresh and interesting, and I think CodeYear does that well so far. Thanks for the recommendation!

No problem man, that's what the club is for. Also, code academy has python, ruby and java programs

HDD's are soooo cheap nowadays.

Especially compared to SSDs

SSD's aren't going to go down in price until someone figures out better manufacturing processes to make them. They're, from what I understand, hard to produce right now. I don't forsee it staying that way for much longer, Samsung partnered with someone to make cheaper nand flash processes last year.

You just need to know when to buy them.... When they are on sale for half price. Lol
I usually see them on sale or $.50-.60 a GB

The ThinkCentre only has a P4 proc, not sure on the speed though. It ran XP super slow. Half a gig of RAM.

I'll fix it, though. I had my old P4 beast running Win7 Ultimate 32-bit just fine, even ran CoD4 pretty well.

Only thing that really perked my interest was the basic GPU with DVI and VGA. Dual monitors, and old-school gaming!
