Hi science people,

Im looking at buying a CP barrel for my ion, with a .696 back, because i'm having some awful problems with barrel breaks, and in my humble, non informed opinion, i thought it would break less paint. However, i've been advised by a very experienced player that it will break more paint, because the balls will bounce around in the barrel.

True or false?

Will it break paint more or less? (and theoretical views are welcome as well as proved ones)

there seems to be some evidence showing us that. jack wood has mentioned that in his glass barrel work, he saw that even in a reasonably tight bore that they paintball could "bounce" from side to side in the barrel. though i dont think there is enough to conclude that is causing alot of barrel breaks.

our barrel break test also showed that the .693 barrel broke the most paint. we certainly have our doubts whether that is simply statistical (as most of believe), or actually a real effect.

the first thing i would look at though in terms of barrel breaks is the paint quality myself.

so really, there just isn't enough evidence showing that an overbore breaks more paint. but we have seen it happen and that idea brought up by interesting test results.

I overbored really, really crappy oily paint yesterday, just in my back yard, from my mini. I mean this was $6.99 for 500 balls. And at 290fps I had 0 barrel breaks and 0 chops. I was amazed, actually. I know that's not exactly brittle paint, but it's still not too hard to break.

So I don't think overboring will break more paint necessarily. There's other factors. And I think if you really overbored you could get balls bouncing around, but to be honest in most cases there isn't going to be enough room in there for balls to be bouncing back and forth in the barrel. IMO

.696 is a huge bore, that would leave a ton of room to wiggle and bounce, considering that theres no paint that large that i know of...

but i think its mainly paint quality thats the main factor in breaks., if everything is clean and in good shape.

it was actually the .695 freak back.

arent the freak tips overboared to something like .700? something totaly huge...

they seem very equall to .695

i had a pt extreme pistol who was bored to an extreme .710+ and got massive breakage, so i wouldent rule out overboring for more breaks.

I've had more breaks using a 691 thena 689

Although I was sceptical at first, I'm beginning to definitely think that underboring does break less paint. At the last walkon I did, I used a .689 bore, and yes I know it isn't a true underbore, but I do intend to get myself a .685 bore of my barrel kit next year. But throughout the entire day I never had one break in the barrel and it was a cold winters day, being around -2C for pretty much the entire morning. Yet the walkon before I used my .693 bore barrel on a normal day, with the same paint and I racked up atleast two barrel breaks. Next year when I get more games in I'll be say that overboring may definitely cause more breaks, but I'll have to wait and see.
