Going up from the ranks of D6 to Pro takes about 5 years minimum. And even with that there is a huge financial asset you must have. You have to be able to travel 3+ hours on fridays and practice all weekend long and then drive back. Not to mention some of your tournaments and even some practices you will have to fly to get there.

pro player = Enough motivation and dedication in order to travel (mostly) and play paintball non-stop (no time for full job or studies)
pro team = Money to pay the equipment, the paint, the travels, the hotels etc.. for all the players.
So if you find 9 other dudes ready to put they're jobs and/or studies aside for paintball and the money (and time) to pay those dudes 3-4 days of practice and tournament per week, then you have your "pro team".

So how is it that I still see pro players on rec ball or just playing speedball (non-practice), and that even jrab is going to school now. How is there no time for it?

Yeah there are a lot of pro players that are doing college, Jrab being an example. Or Dalton Vanderbyl from Dynasty.
