I was bored and I took the barrel off my gun and shot it a few times. It didn't even make it past 10 feet, it just shot and plopped down. When I put the barrel on it went sooo much farther, why does this happen?

w/o a barrel there's no "container" to allow the force of the air pressure to accelerate the paintball. the air just flows around the ball as soon as it has moved at all.

what he said, the air is all released at once from the trigger pull, and it does'nt have enough time to push the ball outwards, it just goes everywere at once, instead of staying beehind it to blow it out.

To illustrate what's happening, try this:

Put a paintball in your open palm. Now blow on it. How far can you get it to go?

Now put that paintball in a barrel. Blow on the end of the barrel. How far can you get it to go?

taking off the barrel is like blowing on the ball in your open palm.
