So I finally re-downloaded Fraps after buying it a few years ago and noticed something was amiss. 20 minutes of video took up ~168gb. I remember taking 30 minutes and having a 1.7gb file and now I get this 20minutes and 10 2gb files.

Did I fuck something up or is Fraps just that inefficient? My specs haven't changed at all other than adding another hard drive and changing to a quad core processor.

Doesn't sound super out of the ordinary.

Fraps has to code video in real time and doesn't compress the video so they're huge. Just raw AVI. It's jsut so resource intensive that it couldn't possibly record and compress at the same time while producing a quality video.

You'll need to use something like windows movie maker to compress the file.

i just changed a file from WLMP to WMV, it went from something like 40MB to 1.1 GBs. I was like, WHAT THE???

Actually, audio files really don't take up that much space. I have raw FLAC files of songs that span 1-2 hours and they're only a couple megabytes a piece. What takes up 95% of the space in a video file, is the video.

really? Cause I have this movie called Eagle Eye, it's like 90 min, and it takes up 7.3GB on the DVD.

Thats because that video is compressed.

Uncompressed HD files are too big for most computers/dvd players to play. I have 2 min recordings in my fraps folder that are almost 4 gigs



@OP: Get another Hard drive, 1tb drives are cheap, and totally worth it

um, ATM they arent very cheap. with prices still higher than before, he should wait out till the prices are normal, then buy one.

I DO already have 1.25tb in my system.... Also, only Seagate has cheap drives since Western Digital's prices are STILL recovering from the flooding where they lost 80% of their stock.

I will never trust a Seagate in my life after they keep dying in less than a year in a well maintained and stationary desktop.

I don't really have a huge issue with storage space but I was just wondering why they went from 500mb for a minute clip @ 720p to 8.7gb @1080p for a minute clip in Fraps.
