Resident Evil: Origins
Prior to the infamous incident in the Umbrella Corporation complex underneath Raccoon City there was a similar incident in a smaller lab in an isolated complex in Wyoming under a town called Pleasant Grove. While similar to the Raccoon City facility and incident, it was on a much smaller scale. While Raccoon City was a regular, operating city of with a population of 100,000 ordinary citizens, Pleasant Grove was purpose-built as a cover for the underground facility, known as “Mobius,” and the only residents were the lab technicians and support for the town itself.
Matthew Jacobs had worked in the Mobius complex for 5 years. During that time he had developed an excellent record didn’t seem like any sort of security risk. Applications for clearance to new areas were approved without a second thought. The unfortunate truth for Umbrella Corp was that Blackthorne Security had approached him long ago and recruited him.
Blackthorne was a purely-government entity, funded by black ops dollars that operated as a tool for use in risky situations that required plausible deniability. It was set up to be totally disposable. If anything catastrophic happened the CEO and other “executives” would publicly be brought up on charges, convicted of treason, and (supposedly) executed or sent to Leavenworth to live out the rest of their days. In actuality they would then be given some surgery and new identities and serve in some other “black” capacity somewhere else.
The U.S. government wanted to begin their own project, and had convinced Jacobs to come on board by promising him a large sum of money as well as a permanent, key position within the new project. All he had to do was invest the time to get himself into position to covertly remove samples of the pathogens, compounds, and vaccines they were working on at Mobius.
The government knew that someone who could be swayed by appealing to his greed and ambition could be swayed again, by others, later. For this reason they knew they would never deliver on their promises after Jacobs delivered the goods. This distrust was well-founded, as Jacobs was already preparing for future opportunities by caching other samples to sell, or barter with, later. This was a slow process as he could only sneak out the smallest samples without the loss being noticed, as well as being able to get them through security. He knew that, once he made the delivery to the government and collected his cash, he would never have access to Mobius due to the fact that they would likely blow the whistle on him once they found out he had no intentions of becoming their permanent stooge. He was in it for the money…plain and simple.
However things went off the rails during his last egress from the facility with yet another vial. Unfortunately the container he absconded with was faulty and enough of the Tyrant Virus (later referred to as the T-virus) virus leaked out and, while Matthew Jacobs was unaffected, those he encountered outside the facility. You see, while those on the Mobius staff, including technicians and security, were all inoculated against the viruses, the staffs of the eateries, stores, and shops were not.
In the end most of the town were quickly affected by the rapidly-spreading virus and became the same type of ravenous creatures we are familiar with from the Raccoon City incident. As Umbrella Corp paramilitary security forces emerged from the underground facility to attempt a cleanup, U.S. government troops from Blackthorne Security converged on the site, tipped-off by Mathew Jacobs when he saw what was happening. In a nice bit of karmic backlash Jacobs was shredded by “zombies” shortly after he placed the call.
The government had demanded an initial delivery to “seal the deal” with Jacobs and, so, he had delivered a vial of the vaccine early on. It was much easier to get out of the lab with the cure than it was the disease. The government had duplicated the synthetic vaccine and had a large supply. This was used to inoculate the Blackthorne troops on the way in.
The government forces were under orders to eliminate all resistance, seize the lab, and lock it down. Then they would simply run a cover-up and resume operations themselves.
When they arrived the vast majority of the infected had been eliminated, leaving a few stragglers here and there to be destroyed. However, the Umbrella Corp forces were far more numerous, and formidable, than expected.
So a battle ensued between Umbrella Corp and Blackthorne units, with the remaining infected townspeople serving as an, albeit unnerving, wild card. The infected had no stake in the battle. They simply wanted to eat. Eat the soldiers that is.
