I need help! So I'm building my PC, and I did an external build before I put in my case. I plugged everything in, but when I turn it on, when it gets to the boot error (which is because i have no operating system, it's expected) the monitor has horizontal lines of colors, sometimes green or orange. What could cause this? Is it a faulty gpu? Please help!

Can you maybe show us a picture?
It might be a GPU problem, or an LCD problem.
But most likely, it's a software/driver problems, or I guess the absence of drivers.

I would put money on it being a connection/cable problem. I would highly doubt that it is a GPU problem, and it is not a driver problem. At that level, nothing is being used. It is running off the basics, and hasnt loaded any drivers, especially not anything as advanced as graphics.

I would check for loose wires, and check the pins. Are you using VGA? DVI? HDMI? I am betting on VGA, but maybe DVI. I would be shocked if this was on an HDMI. Anyway, especially with VGA, things like this can happen if the cable isnt seating nicely. Make sure to tighten it into place if all else fails, and see if that happens. I know many people that just stick it in, and dont use the screws, and then when they get everything into place, it slightly pulls a corner out of the socket, and when they turn it on, they have lines, no color, no signal, etc. So check that first.

Damaged connectors, or even a bad wire could also be the cause. If you have a second cable, try it out.

My splash screen was a weird color when I did my external build, but when I put it all together and installed drivers and such it was fine. What are your specs? I just built my computer 2 weeks ago.

]As the others have said: Drivers or Cable Connectors. I've had the same problem with a VGA cable.

PSU: 600w OCZ Power Supply

CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 plus

Sorry for the crappy picture, I had to use my webcam. But more or less the bright spots are the green, and the text on top is the boot error, which is supposed to be there.

Hmmm. Did you try using a DVI? I'd try that, because with mine, I can't use the HDMI without getting interference.
