So I think it's time to upgrade my zoom lens.
I run a pretty cheap 70-300 NIKKOR lens with the mind blazing apenture of 4.5 to 5.6. And it's made of plastic.

I would really like a 70-300/100-300 lens with a fixed apenture of something like 4 or less.(of course teh sharpness and contrast should be as good or better than my current one)
Manufacurer is whatever but I prefer Sigma or Tamrom.
It would need to be built tought.

I shoot a Nikon so it will need Nikon F threading.

Price doesn't matter that much really but you don't have to find THE most expensive lens

Anyone with suggestions?

i dont know anyone who shoots with a 100-300 stig, so i cant really comment.
inversely, i dont know a single paintball photographer who doesn't have some sort of 70-200 in his bag.

Sigma makes a pretty good 70-200 2.8. Tamron is supposed to have a good one too, but i hear about the sigma more.

if at all possible, i would try and get a nikon 70-200 since many third party companies have QC issues. Sigma is fairly notorious for front/back focusing.
if you look at most reviews that all say something along the lines of "if you can get one that works, its an amazing lens."

Sigma does have an amazing warranty and they'll more often than not fix any issues you might have, but it's a hassle.

The only things I didn't like about it is that the autofocus motor is annoyingly loud, and slower than the Nikon 70-200

Get the Nikon 70-200mm VR I. It focuses much more quickly and quietly.

Shot that with a 55-200 by Sigma. I actually shot the entire event with the 55-200 Sigma. It shot beautifully. The lighting of the pictures seemed to improve greatly while using it opposed to my Nikon 55-200. ( I just borrowed the Sigma to compare them) But yes the Sigma lenses are great and for me at least, typically have better lighting, most likely because of aperture ,and partly because I decided to shoot the entire event on aperture priority which makes the biggest difference. I know it's not exactly a "Telezoom" but works great for me for paintball photography. However, I am going to be picking up a 28-300 and I will let you know how that works out!

I'm not using anything over fixed f/4.

Then I'd be better off with my 70-300 f/4.5 - 5.6

Yeah, the good Nikon glass is way to expensive.

Besides, from what I have heard, the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 doesn't really have any compatabillity problems with a Nikon camera.

It's loud and slow, but it works.

The lens itself is awesome though.

I would look on ebay for a used nikon 70-200 f/2.8 vr (not vr ii). for a few hundred more you can get nikon quality without having the issues that come with a third party lens.

It would cost me almost double as the Tamron is new.

Besides, I might get a VRII later this year. or a VR and a D700. Depends on how much money I can earn and what I want at the time.

I've heard bad things about Tamron's......but I haven't actually used them.
