Well Im planning on doing a horned steel helmet (props to Borg for the inspiration since his helmet kind of got me wanting to make one) Using real (non-explosive) 20mm bullets

In case you dont know 20mm's are fucking cannons

VID:

Heres the helmet I plan on using, Im keeping the red star an painting the green black

Day 1

What I started with:
Posted Image

Then I drilled them out to 3/16 using a drill press, unfortuneatly I had to eye-ball so you can tell some aren't 100% dead center
Posted Image

Then I hit a snag, I was tapping one of them and since I drilled rather small I had to muscle the points through the steel and well.....it kind of broke and tried to take it out but failed miserably :( I really only need two and have eight but it still sucks, because it was one of the few that was damn near center and I could have used it in the future.
Posted Image

Oh well, I got to sanding down the ones I'd be using so I can paint them better and clean them up a bit and they came out pretty cool on their own, silver bullet style.
Posted Image

But thats it for my first day of working on it, anyone have suggestions and how I can go about doing a better tap job? I mean I worked my way about half way through till it broke, but it wasnt easy since it is a hand tool and cutting through steel isn't easy to begin with.

okay I am a steel worker so I know what you are talking about with steel being a pain in the ass. and I have to ask, did you use lube while you were tapping those rounds? if you didn't use some sort of cutting oil or lubricant than I suggest that. I would also suggest because bullets are made of VERY hard steel that you should use a bigger tap, make 1/4 inch holes because a 3/16 will be a pain every time. And just because you got the tap stuck doesn't mean you can't just drill it out. just take your time and go nice and slow with a slightly larger bit like a 7/32 or a 1/4 inch bit and then you can get the tap out and try a larger tap. but that is the only suggestion i cna give also are you making damn certain that your tap is square with your hole and centered? ALSO, when you drill these holes you have ot eye ball center which is kinda understandable but are you making sure that the hole itself is actually going square into the round itself. Just a couple things to think about.

Yeah thanks for that, I was using a bit of oil but it was still a pain and I was thinking of drilling out the tap also but I didnt want to run the risk ruining a drill press that isnt mine <_<

I have another bit here thats 1/4 but im unsure if it will go through the steel, the original bit I used was one of those DeWalt titanium bits but the 1/4 is plain steel that came with the tap.

Yes I make damn sure the drill is going in nice and straight, Im using a makeshift jig where I cut out 3/4 hole in a block of wood using the same press then I hammered these in, drilled it, then pulled it out.

This makes me want to make some with some huge like .88 caliber anti aircraft rounds that I have seen at the war surplus store near me. I have a shell from one, and I can stick my entire fist inside of the shell.

I just tried it and I can fit both my hands inside it. The bullets would most likely be the size of a 16oz co2 tank.

You can see both my hands fit fine in it, there is also a 20oz co2 in it with some space around it. That is an old casing, it was made into some sort of mug as a trinket.

Your only going to be able to fit like two on it. Make devil horns with them.

Well my next question is what RPM were you drilling at? because you need to have a nice slow steady revolution. is this drill press adjustable? is it used for wood? or is it industrial? and frankly a titanium bit is not necessarily what you need. as long as you take your time and I recommend carbide tips usually. and make sure you are using a liberal amount of oil. and as for ddrilling it out you should have no probs drilling out the tap if you use a 1/4 inch bit just remember slow and steady. if it seems like you are going to slow and burning it but it is still kicking up shavings then use more oil.
