I would also change the motherboard for a different one, I don't really like AsRock, they have had really bad quality control in the past.

The other options is to get a 6870 and an i7, that would give better video rendering speeds.

Outside of Blade's suggestions, I'd go with a Western Digital HDD instead of a Seagate, but that's just personal preference.
EDIT: And at least a 600W Power Supply. (For future proofing)

As stix said i would also recommend a 600w psu, i would recommend a seasonic or corsair. Both highly regarded psu manufactures (seasonic manfucatures crosairs psu's but corsiar designs them). Also do you plan on overclocking?

My system is very similar and I thoroughly enjoy it. I'd also up the PSU
It's all about the game and how you play it, All about control and if you can take it
All about your debt and if you can pay it, It's all about pain and who's gonna make it

the website KBMOD.com has a PC build guide every month with what they'd build at different price points: $500, $800(what they call the sweet spot), $1300, and $1800+

you can very easily either downgrade the $1300 build or upgrade the $800 build.

i've been pricing out a PC build for a while now and their builds are always super solid. I usually take the $800 build replace their suggested GPU with a higher end one(lately its been the EVGA 670 FTW card)

Can you link to the build?

The other option is to look at Tom's hardware, they are one of those "authorities on tech".

yea sure, heres the most recent one for december:
http://www.kbmod.com...-december-2012/

right now, id wait for their January 2013 guide since the december builds included a lot of black friday/holiday specials in their pricing.

like i said, you can always upgrade/downgrade parts as you see fit and have a really really solid system.
Also, read through the comments for any worthwhile changes to the guides. people will sometimes suggest parts that have a little more value, better performance, etc.

The problem with their builds is that they give shity PSUs and cases, even their enthusiast level one has a low end non-modular PSU with a meh case and motherboard.

then you can replace the parts with something you want?
Their builds are just a jumping off point, you could easily take the $800 build and swap out the case, GPU, and PSU and still be close to your range.

I would drop the solid state drive. They aren't practical for the price. Id up the cpu, psu, and jump for 16 gb ram if you can. Or just drop the one harddrive and save the money.
EDIT: Nevermind, see the cpu and mobo are a combo. So yea, get a better psu, fuck the solid state.

Why? getting an SSD is one of the best ways you can speed up your computer. My laptop that has an SSD boots to desktop in 15-18 seconds.

I'll post my $1000 build in a few hours, it's good IMHO, I didn't sacrifice anything for price.

Now, this isn't an extreme gaming build. It has future proofing (good case, good motherboard, good PSU), but the graphics section is a bit lower because of this. This will be a perfect build if your doing more video encoding (you can OC the CPU).

Extreme in the sense that the GPU Isn't that great, outside that, everything in this would make an excellent PC. Down the road, upgrade the GPU to a 670 or a 7870 and you'd have yourself a really really good Gaming PC.

All the SSD will do is start things a bit faster. Once you are actually into anything, the ram takes over, so it doesn't really speed anything up except boot time. My desktop here boots in 30 seconds, with a 2 tb WD hdd. Albeit I'm running a hacked version of Windows 7 thats lacking many unnecessary programs, but still. I've never found regular hard drives to inhibit anything by loading too slow. It isn't bad technology, I just think it isn't worth the money, personally.

I disagree.
Loading programs is instant with an SSD, boot is instant etc.
And, RAM only dedicates 100MB of memory for the system.

You could also try reddit.com/r/buildapc
But if you're looking for a nice gpu, I have a 7950 and I love it. It is the one that is 280 after 20 Mir on new egg, it gets pretty smooth framerate on far cry 3 on the highest settings with little to know screen tearing. There is also a lot of room for overclocking.
I also think that the windows 8 for $15 is still in effect, and that could be a cheaper solution
