this is totally out of the blue, but figured id throw it out there.

Legally, you retain the copyright to any original works you produce automatically. As long as it is original to you and put in a "fixed medium", you own the copyright without any extra steps.
you dont have to file for a copyright to actually own one, you only have to file for one if you are trying to enforce it.
