Hey guys, I need some help on deciding on a laptop. The high school I'm going to uses Macs, so for my first computer, I'm getting a Macbook. I'll be really just doing recreational stuff on it, like web, e-mail, schoolwork, and maybe some photo and video work. I'm not super tech-savvy, so could someone tell me if it's more worth it to get the current Macbook Pro, or get the 2012 version (Retina edition)?

Thanks!

Don't spend the ridiculous amount of money on the Retina display. You'll never need that resolution, ever.

What does it matter? They are both the same. One has a better screen and the other is cheaper

Blade's right. Aside from SandyBridge and the retina. Not much has changed. Save the money and go buy some strippers or something.

I think I'm going to end up getting the current Macbook. I mean, it still has a stunning display regardless, and I won't be pushing my computer's capabilities to the limits anyway.

Being 14, I can only laugh at these responses.

Isnt the whole Retina display just a bunch of Apple marketing...

"stunning display".... yea, nope..

If you/your parents have a hole burning in their wallets, go buy it..
Just get the regular one, use the saved money on something a bit more useful

Lets not start any Mac hate threads.. Im trying to say it from the stand point of like the Devils Advocate..

I'm going to the Apple Store really soon, and checking both out. I may just get the last model, unless the new one really wows me.

Pretty much from the factory, all Macs come with a super glossy display.. the Matte display isnt glossy at all, it wont be a mirror rather then a monitor..
If there was any light above or behind you, youd have to turn up the screen brightness just to se ewhat your actually doing.. with the matte display, its all good..

Actually, get the matte display.
Laptops with matte displays have more expensive screens because gloss is cheap, matte is expensive.

I'm in the same boat as the OP.
However, when I go to the apple website and look at it I can't see a matte screen as an option. Is it something you have to ask for in store or something?

Just wondering, if you're just going to be reading emails and such why not just pick up a cheap laptop? You could always run a virtual box with whatever OSX version you want.

Sorry, I didnt realize he absolutely couldn't use anything else. I'm homeschooled so whatever lol. I didn't know how hard it would be to use something else, and besides, virtual boxes FTW Posted Image But honestly, I dont understand why highschools use macs and ipads for school. Pretty expensive for the simple tasks they're for...

I may end up picking up the new one, because I'm not doing heavy work and using tons of storage, so 256GB of Flash storage is fine by me, and I'm hardly ever going to use discs, so I can pick up an optical drive in the future. My aunt uses Macs and Macbooks every day at work, so I'll be talking to her soon.

I like the Mac because of the simplicity of it, and that OS X is simply stunning in regard to how intuitive it is.

Also, to whoever asked about the matte display, I researched it, and it's an add-on that you can get if you buy online.

I wouldn't go so far as to say OSX is intuitive. But it is highly more functional than most other UNIX based OS'.
