Really above the $200 mark, any camera is going to shoot amazingly, as long as it can so in HD.
Yes, I work at Wal*Mart, got a problem with that?

I wanted something to put on my gun as well but decided against that. Now I just want something I can protect while recording.

I keep planning on making one, it's not that hard. You can just glue 5 pieces of plastic together, and make the last side a hinge/door so you can just open it up and change the settings.
And you can put just adhesive foam on the inside to protect the camera.

If you want to take photos of people far away from you then you'll want a long lens (300mm). If you want to take large group shots, then you want a wide angle lens like a 15 or 18mm. I could keep going that's how complex this question is.
Here's a link to the Lumix I mentioned above, you might be able to find it cheaper - I just grabbed the first link so you could see a decent camera.

If you want to get into photography, I would go with a Canon Digital Rebel T2i, T3i, or T4i - it just depends on the cash you want to drop. The idea behind these camera's is the ability to change out lens'. Keeping one body and several lens' will allow you to adapt to different situations.
Hope this helps.
For my next outing, I'm looking to get a good action video cam and I know the GoPro is a good camera, the only issue is its boxy shape. I found another camera called the EPIC HD 1080 which is more streamlined, I just don't know much about it yet - maybe someone here can chime in and help us both out.

I originally purchased the Epic 1080 but was unable to find a decent way to mount it. It can not be mounted on the side without the mount disrupting the profile.
Since I plan to record other people and mount the camera on my marker, I will get the Go Pro HD. That's if I can find a store tomorrow with one.

If you have a bike, the reflector mount under the seat works as a perfect camera mount.
Just get some sticky foam and put it around the barrel and get a screw to fit the camera.

Thanks for the tip Aulldeath. I do have lots of spare bike parts from the good days of commuter cycling.
