Alright well I do not have a sound card in my computer. I know I could find some fairly cheap but was wondering if I could plug in a external sound card (the cheap USB ones) and have it work with me just using headphones.

Of course it would, that's what they are designed for.
But really, you Desktop or laptop will have pretty good on oars audio, so just use that.

What Blade said, on board will be more than good enough for 99% of people.

I think he means he doesn't even have on-board audio. In that case, go for the USB.

If you have on board audio on the motherboard, there is no need for a sound card unless you have a high end sound system plugged into it. The on board audio is more than sufficient for regular speakers and most any headphones. If your on board audio isn't working or it doesnt have on board audio for some reason, a cheapy usb one should suffice. But if you can score an inexpensive internal one or are willing to buy an internal one (they really arent that expensive for half way desent cards) go for it.

Good catch. If you really need one, buy a USB one like Bacon Man said, or just get a cheapo PCI one from Newegg/Bestbuy. They shouldn't be more than like $10 on Newegg, can't say for sure about Bestbuy.

Um, I have NEVER seen a modern mobo without on board sound, sorry, I don't think it exists, even my (7?) year old computer with a 7 year old mobo has on board audio.
Plus, most/almost all have front panel audio so even if the back panel isn't working, this should.

But, if all else fails, buy a USB sound card, but a PCI would be better.

It could be bad, not working, etc.
