Is it a nice cocking rod, or is it one where you don't care if you use pliers on it to get leverage?

Try gently tugging it back and forth while unscrewing it.Also,if you have one of those rubber grip things that are used to open jars that won't open, then that may work aswell.

One trick to try is to remove the knob from the rod, then screw two 10-32 nuts onto the rod. Use a wrench and try to unscrew the inner nut, and the outer nut should lock it place, putting more force on the rod.
