Just because you smoke doesn't mean you are going to suck at a sport. It really doesn't have that big of an effect on you.

They willstill be able to run that mile if they are in shape. Ask someone out of shape who doesn't smoke if they can run a mile... Smoking really isn't the issue until later in life when you have been doing it for years and it builds up.

When I was in the military, I knew guys that smoke a pack of Marlboro Reds a day and breeze through their two mile run. I've also known guys who've never smoked in their lives and struggle to make it 500 yards without puking. I used to smoke, and I was a mediocre runner. When I finally quit, I was a phenomenal runner (i'm not sure about now..), and I just felt better in general, so I'm sure it affected me personally.

It just depends on the persons fitness level and how the smoke and tar affect their lungs. I know it used to screw me up when I smoked more than a pack in a week.. But it doesn't do that to everyone.

I certainly don't want to start spouting about how smoking is bad for you everybody should quit. As a former smoker, I cannot tell you how extremely annoying that was (not more than loud fake coughing though,..

One thing I would wager, though- really talented players who smoked and then quit would almost certainly improve on the field. I don't smoke, but I can't see it being anything but a detriment to performance.
