Hello everyone, and thanks for reading. My current marker is an Axe, not broken in, but I've always leaned more towards the Spoolies side on the whole spool VS poppet topic. I'm aware that the Axe is an Inline Poppet which is almost like a middle of the road deal when it comes to smoothness and efficiency. My question is, what is recommended as a trade (as close to straight as possible) to get me a spool valve marker in the range of an Axe. I've been looking at the Proto Reflex, MacDev Drone/Droid, used Dm8-10, used Geo 2, or maybe a Quest. Any input or advice will be well appreciated.

The MacDev Drone is technically a dump valve marker, but I would choose that if you really want a spool. Why would you want a gun that is labelled a spool if you're fine with your Axe?

I've always preferred quietness over efficiency as I can fill after every game at my local field, and the ergos of the Axe aren't my favorite. Also, whenever I'm not playing, I love disassembling and maintaining my marker inside and out. I guess you could say I'm OCD about it. Perfect for a spoolie owner XD

A droid would probably be good for you. That seems like a good, solid spool

You could probably get a Shocker if you wanted, but the Droid will probably shoot the best. I would also immediately rule Geos out, they are aweful in terms of being smooth.

My only gripes with a Droid would be the trigger, the vertical macroline fit out of the bottom of the reg, and supposedly the bolt is capable of shredding o-rings. Other than that it would be a really great option for me. As far as shockers go, all I've really heard is that they're somewhat fragile, and a pain to turn on. I play aggressively and would prefer a gun that can take a reasonable amount of beating. And okay man, thanks for the warning on the Geo's.

Based on what I've heard, the PRR and DM9+ are great. They have that classic silent "poof" sound you only get from a spoolie.

Between the two I'd be leaning towards the DM series just for the sake of it being a high end. But I agree, I'm a fan of Dye markers. I just hate that damn UL trigger..

The newer DM's are the same thing every year, so a DM10 is nearly the best DM.

If I'm unable to find a DM in my range, would the PRR suffice in terms of their spoolie quality compared to the DM10?

I agree with this.

There are aftermarket triggers for the Droid available, I have the Violent Series.
Just make sure that the Droid has the V3 valve installed and you'll be golden.

Choosing between the 2, Ill go for a DM9, still within $300-$400 range stock.
Not much of a difference between a DM9 and 10.

I like my drone dx, I'd still get a dm9-12 instead though.

They're really quiet spool valve markers. They used to be the THE highend marker to own. Their design is similar/identical to the DLX Luxe.

I'm aware that they've been around for quite a while. Is there somewhere that would have the years and models with the upgrades by years since release? Also, any word on their fragility?

I dont see how they're fragile, mine always works. Get an SFT if you want a cheap one, NXT if you want a nicer one with larger trigger frame. Lurker Eigenbolt is the ultimate upgrade for them. There's also the normal selection of triggers, frames, backcaps, etc for them. If you do get a SFT shocker make sure it at least has an HE bolt, NXTs came stock with it so dont have to worry there. All the same models of shockers are pretty much the same no matter the year. So the thing to look for is it a SFT or an NXT, and is it private label or not.

I'd assume if I ever got an interest, I'd nab an NXT by the sound of it. Also, if it is a private label, which ones would I want to look out for?

look into a DM9 or MacDev CLONE (NOT DRONE). They are going to be the beat bets on having that excellent "spool shot", but if money is also a crunch look into a Shocker, the triggers feels strange on them, but they also have that really soft shot.

Best Privete label shockers: Octane, TonTon, Russian Legion, and the strange one isn't bad.

Russian Legion shocker will cost the most.

Everyone seems to really support a DM9. But I'm also curious about the Shockers.. But thanks everyone for your input. Anymore advice is always welcome.

A pm8 is in your range, it was basically a dm9 prototype its lightweight and slimmed down. You can trade straight and ask Em to add some $$ for an aftermarket trigger, although most pm's usually come with one in trades
