spyders break, and they have bad quality controll, any gun that comes from the factory and probably needs to have the spring clipped should be ruled out.... so

the trick is, buy used, especially if you dont know if you will like the gun, chances are if you decide to sell it, you wont take much of a loss... and in that pricerange used, you can find

used older timmys (great guns, require some knowledge)
Invert Mini
Proto Rail
Proto SLG
Proto M6 w/o ultralite frame (another great gun)

timmys and PM6's are both high end guns that now have crappy resale, the rest are mid end, ALL of those are better than a promaster

I had this same question and I was looking at the SLG or PMR, but I was unexpectedly given an Ion. I can say for sure that if I where you I would spend my money on something else other then an Ion. Its just not worth the money that you have to throw at it to make it nice.

Spyders are mainly woodsball guns. Plus you can't upgrade them unless you want to buy directly from Kingman, aftermarket parts aren't really made for them because they're Metric.

Like ExcessiveEgo said, go used. I did and I got my Ion for like $100.

DO not buy a Promaster, especially for 230.l.

Look around the forums, many threads discuss this.

I'd say an Invert MINI if you an find one that cheap. I got mine out-of-the-box new and the box still had the plastic wrap on it and it was $250!

Guns I like that you might want to look at:
MINI
Protos

I was at a field and 3 guys that were friends all had Spyder Electras and they were all trying to fix them XD!

Alias or a Gen 3 Timmy would be a nice safe bet, which can compete with the current guns out.

Dude, i have an 08 electra and i have had no probs with it. All of this BS rumors saying that spyders break all the time is garbage. Except if u get a lemon, but that could happen to anyone from any company.

ok, dont buy a spyder because 90% of them are "lemons"

if you get one that WORKS ur lucky.... most of them need the spring clipped right out of the box, after that they work decent...but quite often i see people having to re-cock their spyders before every shot..... they arent a good beginner gun anymore because companies are making better guns for the same price
