Today we did some testing on how far paintball guns shoot

Not for "effective breaking distance", just simply how far they will shoot.

We took four guns-

Tippmann A5 w/ Flatline @ 285fps (gun wouldn't shoot higher for some reason, tried 4 different tanks and CO2 got it to 285fps) = 289.3 feet
Vanguard Creed @ 300fps = 305.7 feet
SP-1 w/ Apex @ 300fps = 325.7
Tiberius Arms T9 shooting First Strike Rounds @ 300fps = 517.0 feet

We shot down a long, dirt road. For the paintball guns, we shot about 4 pods each, just shooting it at all different angles, 25 degree, 35 degree, 45 degrees, 55 degrees, just shot until Willie got a good idea of where they were landing.

He set a road cone in the "middle" of the disbursement, and we measured (using one of those rolling wheel measuring devices) from our starting point.

Keep in mind, one of the rounds did hit Willie, and broke on his shoulder at 500 feet

Here are screen shots of the measuring wheel, video will be up shortly

I don't see how

Once the round is out of the barrel, that's when all the exciting stuff happens

It's called a "trundle wheel" or "surveyor's wheel". They are O.K. for a quick and dirty count.

Personally this is what I use (for work and pleasure, exact model and tripod):

It should be said that the Flatline's ideal operating range is from about 240-270 fps. Outside that range, unpredictable things tend to happen, which usually comprises of ball breakage. It's also not uncommon to have difficulty raising velocity much higher than what you were showing. The Flatline is just one trippy little device.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Flatline would have actually chucked paint further than this test showed (probably closer to the rest of the pack) at a lower velocity. The damn thing's so picky it's frightening.

i can testify for this. i used old high schools football field to test and i put one right near the t-joint of the upright from the opposite end.

setup was tippmann effect a-5 with high flow valve, techt hammer, supafly bolt, jcs alum powertube, rampage board, all techt cyclone parts (not that that matters), 14" .693 furious lotus barrel, 48/45 DXS tank. 300FPS operating at 340psi (still trying to get it lowerrrr)

Was the Creed's range characteristic of a typical nonApex/nonFlatline gun?

Yes, the maximum range of a paintball at 300fps exit velocity is in the range of 120 yards.

Yeah it caught me in the left shoulder and broke and I was at about 490 to 500 ft. You will see from the videos where I tried to be in the stream to get an average landing location. There were some shots that went beyond and also some that went shorter. But I went to try and find the middle the best I could for each gun. I hope the video will show that balls coming in and how some were short and some were long.

exactly, the Creed was simply to judge the distance of a normal, high end paintball gun with a normal .689 14" barrel

Just the reference point

I varied between 50 to 100% spin, at all angles of firing

we shot 4 pods through the apex, constantly changing it up to see how far we could go

that is awesome.. That is the proof that FSR's are worth the money.. I can't believe that the round broke on Willie at 500 feet. That is so awesome.. hearing that and hearing about Mike sniping that guy at LL through the mesh is just awesome. Does anyone know if ANY T9 is able to take the FSR's? Or is there some new gen of T9 that I will have to get?
