Ello all, i actually wrote this thread up sometime back in the manufacturers> smart parts> hard goods> markers section, and as we all know, most new people are always given the advice to get either the Blitz or the SP1/Vibe. So i'm reposting it here, where i hope it'll help the new guys who 99% of the time won't venture that far into the manufacturers section.

cheers all

STATS (stock)

- Essentially a Vibe on the inside, just with tac rails and the "real gun look"
- 11 BPS
- NO eyes. not when you have the ...
- comes with Low force bolt (anti chop bolt).
- weighs in at slightly under a kilo, or just a little over 2 lbs. (just the gun, with the stock 8 inch barreland the 9 volt battery). Weighs lighter than an A5 (3.5 lbs)
- Center feed neck
- runs at 200 psi
- Uses one(1) 9 volt battery

PROS (what i like about it)

Trigger pull - The trigger is very nice and crisp. It's lighter than a mouse click, and it's very snappy.

Low force bolt (LFB) - Essentially, if it were to hit a paintball that was halfway into the breach, it would pull back instead of completing the cycle.

Feed neck - It's VERY sturdy, I've run with a fully loaded three hundred (300) round hopper and it doesn't shake or buckle (much like how a 98 custom does).

ASA wedge - the wedge makes the tank angle downwards. So if you're using Co2, the liquid won't flow upstream as easily

Co2 - yes, it can operate off Co2. And it has a release valve to release any Co2 that gets into the gun.

Tac light holder - It holds the standard 2 X AA battery Maglights.

Body - Made from high impact polymer, or that thing Glock handguns are made of

Rails - They are actually designed to fit real military equipment.

ROF adjustment (on the fly mode) - Allows you to change from semi, to 3 round burst, to full auto. Each alternating after pressing the power button once.

Regulator - same ones as the one you get on the Luxe, a high end gun.

CONS (what i don't like about it)

Smart Parts - Well, first on the list would be the news that Smart Parts is closing down. And in all honesty, it does play a big part in whether you will be buying this gun or not. According to some, SP is just taking a break, and they will be due to reopen eventually. Some say they are doomed to oblivion. I can't affirm to either, however, in the worst case scenario that SP does close for good, chances are, some company will purchase the patent on SP guns, and continue to produce/maintain the SP1 model. Your warranty would probably not be valid with the new company, but that thing only lasts 6 months, and the problems you face are nothing your local gunsmith can't handle. AGAIN, all this is theory, so don't hate me on that. On the other hand. There are a lot of aftermarket parts out there in the event that some part of your SP1 farts. So will your SP1 live if you buy it? yes, look at the autocockers and automags.

Barrel - although it is still a decent barrel, and it's quite accurate with it, the barrel is a little short when it comes stock (8 inches)

Rails - The rails are a bit of a hassle cause the side rails don't actually come out. They're glued in place, but are not/no exposure to any vitals, so if paint got stuck in there you're in no trouble. I also wish it was made of aluminum, that way chipping won't happen as much

Eyes - it doesn't come with the gun stock. Would be nice though, but the LFB is sufficient.

Tac light holder - My model came with a securing pin that had a rivet for the pinhead instead of an allen key fitting, so i couldn't remove it. But for practicalities sake, having a tac light on the gun is kinda pointless. Can't use it during day time, you'll get lit up using it night time. And the light could get damaged if you're a rough player.

Quirks - It seems the gun sometimes comes with quirks, mine was the solder on the solenoid coming loose. For others it's the ASA leaking. This can all be easily remedied with a local pro shop gun tech.

Wedge - i use HPA, so i want to remove it to reduce the size of the grip frame. However if i want to remove it, i'll need to replace the braid line with a macro line.

Clamping feed neck - The allen key adjustable clamp is a little troublesome to adjust, but you may replace the stock feedneck with one from trinity. Like what Mike uses.

Allen keys - The gun comes with some allen keys, but they aren't near enough to cover all screws on the gun. Bring your gun (remove the barrel please) to walmart or home depo and look for all allen keys that fit your gun

O-rings - The gun needs a lot of o-ring maintenance.

Button/ROF selector - The button can sometimes get stuck if you push it in too much. You'll have to remove the grip frame and readjust it. Either that or don't push it too hard, just use the tip of your finger nail to press the button.

Nooks and cranny's in the gun - this'll eat up a lot of time to clean paint off from.

cracks - The rear back plates top screw can actually break off. Hasn't happened to me yet (touch wood and hope it doesn't) but i've seen someone's actually break off. Don't screw it in too hard and you'll probably prolong its life. no it doesn't affect performance of the gun. The vibe actually runs without anything covering the bolt sleeve.

[NEW SECTION! - courtesy of hansolo_uk]
TIPS OF THE TRADE

- dont overtighten the grip screws of it will make the trigger bind
- Be gentle on the backplate, the top screw threads cast isn't that strong
- (WhoRok305) when you install the blackheart you need to pull out the old breech and you need to slide in the new one, then screw in the new board and put in the eyes.
- If you want to disassemble your marker completely, it should be taken for granted that you are NOT to lose a single screw. That aside, i almost made one mistake. When i removed the gripframe, i forgot to secure the button, so it fell off without me knowing. When i finally found the thing, i didn't know that there was an up and down side of the button. When you place the button back in, you will notice the back will have one side that's slanting down. That is the part that should be pointing up, if not, your button will click weird.

FAQ & OPINIONS

Q - can i put a stock onto my SP1?
A - Yes you can, they have adapted car stocks so you could replace the current buttplate with it. But, it isn't necessary. Stocks for real firearms are meant to absorb the recoil when a bullet is being fired, thus making the shots much more steady, but in paintball, the guns experience next to no recoil, so a stock will be there just as aesthetics, or for you to put your marker into your shoulder.

Q - Can i use Co2?
A - Yes, and you'll have to change your dwell settings (i think it's factory set for Co2) but Co2 is a very troublesome propellant. The fill stations i go to are always malfunctioning, either it aint filling, or it's not filling enough, or the valve won't turn, or the valve aint working. And if you have a remote line and a HPA tank, you've got yourself a portable air conditioner, and you don't have to choke on Co2 (i've done that before ) Oh, and trust me, when you tell people you're using Co2, 90% of the time they'll tell you to switch to HPA.

Q - How fast is the gun?
A - Stock, 11 bps. Blackheart board upgrade, 20 bps

Q - Whats the Blackheart board?
A - A board is like the motherboard of your gun, or the heart of your gun. The Blackheart (BH) board is a replacement which allows more features than your stock board. the features are as follows (copied from PBReview)

Fire Rate, 20bps (Adjustable)
Trigger Debounce (Adjustable)
Kick-In Rate for Advanced Modes (Adjustable)
Sustain Rate for Advanced Modes (Adjustable)
Shots Fired to Enter Advanced Mode (Adjustable)
First Shot Drop Software (Adjustable)
PSP Legal Mode (Adjustable)
NXL Legal Mode (Adjustable)
Millennium Legal Mode (Adjustable)
Three Shot Burst
Low Battery Indicator
More User-Friendly Software
Eyes

Q - How do i get the BH board?
A - you buy the board separate, and then the SP1's grip frame is removed (thats where the board is) and you replace the board. Thats all there is to it. But it's recommended that the person who sold you the board install it for you.

Q - Do i need a BH board to keep up with others?
A - In woodsball, honestly, no. 11 bps is plenty to be competitive. If you can afford the upgrade, go ahead. But if you can't, you don't need to, you're gun will still fire awesome.

Q - What are the SP1's barrel threads?
A - Impulse/Ion threads

Q - Is it durable? cause it's like made from plastic
A - It's made from the same thing those Glock handguns are made from. So yes, it's quite durable, i've dropped my gun a couple of times (don't tell the guy i bought it from) and it's still in good condition. Chances of scratching is always there, but not if you take god care of it. And don't stab your gun with a knife to "test" it out. (edit) i recently took a screw driver to the tac rails, don't aren't as tough as the body itself, i have a feeling the rails are plain palstic.

Q - Is it easy to clean?
A - Quite easy. You take off the back plate, unscrew the bolt sleeve, take out the assembly (push it out with a toothbrush or chopstick) lube it up and reverse steps.

Q - Isn't the center feedneck a hassle?
A - This is up to personal preference. Mine is based on practicality. Aiming down the side of the gun is just as good as aiming down the center. You can install offset rails to put in scopes.

Q - So what if it's operating at 200 PSI?
A - this means lower pressure gas is needed to operate it, which means that it gives a quieter shot, and in some cases, makes it slightly more efficient. I can shoot a bag with a 48/3000 tank.

Q - Do i need to use low pressure gas (lpg)
A - No, it works fine even if the tank is putting out 700 psi. Thanks to the regulator, which is the same one that's being used on the Luxe.

Q - Does it feel unbalanced with a remote line on?
A - Personally, i've gotten used to it, and i don't use a stock. If YOU feel it's unbalanced, then by all means, use a stock.

Q - I'm small, should i get it?
A - It's a medium sized gun, you can, but it'll be slightly unwieldy as the grip frame is quite big.

Q - Whats the air efficiency like? (how many shots can i get?)
A - Off a 48/3000 hpa tank, you could get somewhere around a bag of paint (500 rounds)

Q - So, I use Co2 and my regulator constantly vents, much more than it should. What should i do?
A - Through other threads i've seen, switching to HPA fixes this problem.

Q - My trigger got stuck! i pulled it and it won't return to the original position! what now?
A - You probably over tightened the top screw on your grip (the one that holds the battery in)

Q - Can you tell me more? or Are you even reliable? your fat!
A - here, listen to Mike talk

So, I have been having TONS of issues with my regulator "venting" constantly.

I have been using CO2, but I ordered a HPA tank, and was wondering if this would fix my problem of having the regulator constantly vent until the co2 tank was almost empty?

You shouldnt have any issues with hpa. I never had any luck with co2.

Awsome awsome awsome, and as for your reg venting with HPA this will not happen as long as you set your gun to HPA mode.

bring your gun to walmart?! Just buy a set of allen keys and save yourself the hassle and possibly giving paintball another bad reputation by leaving your gun at home.

Yes i know you can bring your gun into walmart but it needs to be in a case.

Oh you should also add in to your post somewhere:

DON'T over tighten the rear grip frame screw because what that does is, it causes the bolt to protrude into the back cap. If the bolt were sticking out enough and then you went to take out the back cap, you basically end up destroying the back cap o-ring or even damaging the backcap itself.

I've personally had this o-ring go bad on me a few times but I was able to fix it.
My Feedback

I'm not very sure what the problem is, although i have heard of it numerous times. Reports gathered indicated that using HPA totally eradicated the issue, so yeah, HPA woulda fixed your problem... ;)

I'll just add this up there eh...

You shouldnt even need to buy a set of allen keys since every home should have a some along with common tools like hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. for repairs

You should mention that if you try to replace the reg on a SP-1 there is a VERY VERY good chance you will blow your solenoid cap up!.... Ya I did it so bug off...

Nice Job, not to bash on you but maybe you should clarify in the beginning that it does not have eyes stock only with a blackheart board. Only because right now it sounds like this "11 BPS, stock. You may upgrade your board to the Blackheart (BH) board, giving you 20 bps and it comes with eyes." I know you meant that the blackheart comes with eyes not the stock gun, but some new players might not. Just trying to help out.

Nice write up.

"tac light on the gun is kinda pointless"

I know it's personal opinion, but I use a Tac light alot. When out and walking back to reinsert at night, the light illuminates the orange barrel condom and reduces the chances of getting overshot walking out lighting the way also. I use a light mounted on the side rail so it easily activated by my thumb.

"Button/ROF selector - The button can sometimes get stuck if you push it in too much. You'll have to remove the grip frame and readjust it. Either that or don't push it too hard, just use the tip of your finger nail to press the button."

Smart Parts made a new redesigned on-off-rof button. Never had a problem since installed, the later made SP-1s should have them installed from factory.

I've neen lucky with my second SP-1, For over a year and a half the marker and regulator never had maintance. None at all. Original Orings and no lube. This weekend will be the first time it will be opened up for inspection. I did this to test the reliablity and ruggedness. I was going to do a review on it, but is pointless at this time as we are not sponsored by SP anymore. It's one tough marker and was use atleast 14 scenarios not counting rec and practice play.
