Edit: And if they have to put, "Not a toy." On the side, it makes me think it's even lower end then that, bit above Brass Eagle's standard's maybe.

lol, without me personally reading the link, i can tell you that it is a gun made by Schrader Brothers and it is the Shadow model. It is your general STBB (stacked tube blow back)
AKA "spyder clone".
From looking at the pictures, it appears to have an all metal upper reviecer (blue part) and a plastic lower frame. All in all, if it does work properly, it should probably work better that a rental gun (assuming the rental gun has had thousands and thousands of rounds shot through it). Simply because it is his own gun and he will remember how it shoots.
but if he is seriously considering playing tournament style paintball, he may want to reconsider. -

depending on how much you play, yeah the armpads should be worth it. Hell, even if you bought some roller blading pads it would be worth it.
You wont be shooting anyone if you are in the hospital with messed up joint problems.
but then again what do I know...... -

If you are looking for a legit vest, i would probably go with the tippmann vest, because it gives you more space to actually customize your vest, whereas the with the other vest, its very similar to just a standard pod harness and you could just wear a regular old hydration pack as needed (like for scenario games or whatever) -
