In Topic: $800 for a new computer

Computers are quite simple. All you really need to look for in compatibility is whether the motherboard fits the processor (look out for sockets on the specs, it should list the compatible processors), the ram works out (ddr3 is the most common anyways), and the heatsink fits the CPU.
A wonderful place for help is bleeping Computer (bleepingcomputer.com).
For lappy brands, I'd recommend Asus, Gateway, Lenovo, HP, and Acer. Don't buy Dell. Ever. -

This...
Usually arstechnica.com, instructables, and a Google search for some programming language or another.
EDIT: forgot xkcd... I can't forget XKCD. -

There's only one option...
Lenovo Think pad with Mint on it.
No virus hassle, no fuss, and it'll keep going until the sun explodes.
And there are also a few games for Linux. (Half Life 2, No Heroes, etc. )
You can also get Wine if you really want Word or any other Windows only apps. Really though, LibreOffice works just as well anyways. -
