I listened to it for 18 minutes straight, and I concentrated as hard as I could. I simply didn't hear anything.

Maybe it doesn't work for people with ADHD? lol.

All I hear under the white noise is rushing water, like from a faucet or from a river. For me it starts out in the beginning as waves, and then turns to rushing water.
"The Eagle born to those who pledge their lives and sacred honor was smiled upon by God and freed from chains and iron collar. He is held aloft on unity, and by History revered for preserving peace through strength his wings now reach across two hundred years...but for each of those and one year more. God has smiled upon The Corps...from the Barbary coast, to the Eastern sand, by sword, by gun or by hand. So it's been said and shall be weighed: Though many are born...few are "made". Faithful Always they shall remain...DOGS TO LET LOOSE WHEN WAR IS WAGED."

interesting thread ... a great little experiment.
The ultimate truth in paintball is that the interaction between the gun and the player is far and away the largest factor in accuracy, consistency, and reliability.

And yes, Gordon is the sexiest manifestation of "to the front."

Outside of the white noise, I hear a very short sound (+- 1 second in length) that repeats quite often. It sounds like Mario's spinning tail attack from Super Mario World. Here's a clip of that sound: Super Mario Bros. 3 Tail.

Age: 27

Background: Software programmer, ex-Navy jet engine and helicopter transmission mechanic, and currently a physics student.

>> Begin Spectrum Analyzer Spoiler <<
The repeating pattern has two prominent signatures at frequencies of 704-714 Hz and 893-899 Hz. The sound lasts for approximately 0.5 seconds. The sound repeats itself 68 times through the entire sound file, at random intervals. No algorithm I used was able to detect this on its own; I found it within the spectrogram using my own eyes and ears.
>> End Spectrum Analyzer Spoiler <<

I'm on the edge of my seat to understand why you're doing this and what the correct answer is. :)

haha, I see the pattern after going back, most of the people who heard another sound where under 20 in age, kinda has to do with the mosquito tone, where the younger you are the higher pitch you can here, but instead of pitch its a test of your ability to dissect what you're hearing.

ok, thanks guys.

Here's the deal - and it's a bit of a jerk move on my part. There's nothing there. It's just some white noise I made with a signal generator.

This is simply an experiment to be used mostly as an example. This is meant to show the massive (and sometimes powerfully mis-guiding) ability of the human brain to build patterns out of random noise. This is the same reason that we use math rather than observation in our experiments.

With my eyes closed I listened to it twice.

I believe I heard a series of very faint (as in slightly above the noise floor) single beeps followed by a double beep. This pattern repeated through the clip but, I can't recall a clear start time.

The pattern was something like Beep, Beep, Beep, bip bip

EDIT: It was right on the edge of what I call detectable. I listened the second time because I doubted what I heard the first time.

Seeing something when it is difficult = success.
Hearing something that isn't there = failure.
