I played guitar when I was about 9 for a year or two, but loved bass and have been playing for about 4 years.

Parade in a week from tomorrow. Oh god... Why...

Still need all black shoes for it. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find all black shoes that are comfortable to march in? It's hell I tell you, HELL!

Good luck! You'll do fine.

You get used to the shoe problem at least you don't have to care around a 35lb snare drum or 50lb tenor Posted Image

Yeah, but I do have a 15 pound trombone (Give or take 5 pounds, not sure on the exact weight) I have to actually carry, no harness to help ;)

In all seriousness, it doesn't bother me one bit. I love marching, and almost every aspect of it. Minus the uniforms and the heat that come with them...

Anyway, I'll be able to find shoes, it's not to big of a problem. But, I'm pretty worried about the band. We're not very good.. Everything has came REALLY fast this year, it's odd...

I have a question

When i'm pressing down the strings for notes then play them it sort of sounds like the strings are hitting against the frets

so your getting like a buzzing sound. well that could be for a few different reasons. your either just not fingering the notes accurately within the frets (not on the frets, but within them.) what I'm saying is you might be pressing the string down directly on the fret rather than in between the two frets.

your strings could be too loose/out of tune. (just buy an electric tuner and tune her up correctly)

or your finale reason- your bass is not "set up" correctly. don't worry though this would still be a relatively easy fix. you just need to go and get your bass set up (by a local luther or in guitar center or something.) have them set it up to you preferences and such. The person who sets it up will make sure the intonation is fine and dandy by adjusting the truss rod and such as well as setting your action to however you want it. it isn't like your bass is a lemon or something, just not setup properly. It happens all the time with guitars and basses. The best way to put it is like your getting your car detailed and cleaned.

Anyone of the 3 reasons above could be it all of those are very common. Also I would get the bass setup anyway, it is the best thing to do when you get a new string instrument. (whether it is just out of the factory, or bought used, I would still do it) and buy some new strings that they can put on while they set it up. I recommend 3 different string brands:
1. DR strings (very good quality brand)
2. Ernie Ball (Slinky) also a good brand
3.D'Addario (will have a big XL on the packet) this is also a good brand

the thing about strings is it is all about preference, there are so many different types of strings. I my self, like Nickle roundwound strings (although im heavily tempted to try the Cobalt strings from Ernie Ball).

Roundwound= more spunky kind of sound, but more rugged on the fingers (dont worry it isn't that bad)
Flat wound= very smooth feeling and more mellow (i dont like these, but some one might)
Posted Image

go into guitar center and start asking questions about setting up your new bass and what strings to use and certain common preferences with bass. Don't go to Sam Ash if you can help it. they are paid by the hour, guitar center is paid by how much they sell so they will be more helpful and at your every whim ;)

No problem! hahaha I always enjoy this topic.

OH yeah that's another thing! Bass string gauges. If i were you, I would go with just the standard gauge for now. the standard gauge set is 45,65, 85, & 105. It will just say 45-105 on the packet. and the sets are about 30-35 bucks for a good quality brand. Feel free to ask me any other question on bass and all.

Instrument: Epiphone Les Paul (2), Yamaha Acoustic Guitar, Fender
Type of Band: School guitar ensemble or by myself
Favorite Song to Play: Either Time or Mother, both Pink Floyd
Genre: Anywhere from Johnny Cash to Led Zeppelin to Avenged Sevenfold

I just saw this and have to join. Yesterday I had my first concert with the guitar ensemble. It went great! I even had a short 12 measure solo and I didn't screw it up, which amazed me because I was shaking so bad! It was a lot of fun, I can't wait until our next concert! I might get the video up sometime within a few days and I'll share it with you all.

Also whats the best way to clean it?

Depends on the sound you want. The closer to the bridge you play, the brighter the sound will be. I like a bright sound so I play at the bridge pickup.

On my P-Bass, I play between the fretboard and pickup. I've only seen one other bassist play it that way. The Summer Set's bassist does it the same way. If you don't want to see the whole video, skip to 3:30 and you'll see how he plays. Video is slightly suggestive.

I generally play in between both pick ups. However, I rest my thumb on the pickup closer to the neck. so a lot of the time I am literally playing on the pickup

Figured I'd update you guys on the parade saturday..

It went pretty well actually. Overcast, but humid as hell. There were a few times where our drumline got really out of order, and it looked like a mess, but for the most part it was good.

Something that really stood out... Some chick on Ecstasy or something like that wandered into our band block, like dancing or something. She had a binky in her mouth and it was really weird. Hilarious though...
