You have to have an interesting subject. There has to be something special with the content as well as composition, lightning and sharpness.

I know, but saying, it's just a portrait doesn't comment on your lighting, or sharpness, your just stating the obvious.
It's like me saying what your reading is text..... Well no shit, it's not like your listening to it.

all my legos are stored at my parents hose... so that wont be happening....

You're talking about the rating thread thing right?
Read what I underlined in his post:

not grabbing me - nothing really going on, just a clock

That should explain it, but if not I will clarify. The camera technique looks fine and it's sharp where it would be, good exposure and all that. But there is nothing really going on in the picture. Nothing special about the clock that grabs people, no special effect used to tell a story in the picture. It's juts a picture of a clock.

If you compare to his own picture that he posted: He has a interesting face expression on his subject. And that grabs you.

I could take a perfect picture of my iPhone standing on the table right now. Everything perfectly exposed and sharp. The image would still be boring. You see where I'm going? ;)
Keep taking pictures of things that interest you, and make the picture interesting. And if I may say so, Chris is very talented at this.

Just wanted to let you guys know about the upcoming meteor shower :) Its on the night of October 20th after midnight (the radiant point is South east). I had a great time capturing the perseid meteor shower back in August and the picture that I did get turned out pretty good. That being said if the skys are clear I will definitely be out there most of the night :)

Well, I'll write down what I can remember in the top of my head.
You get a lot of weird stuff when you've been shooting for three years.

Nikon D3 DSLR
Nikon D7000 DSLR w/ MB-D11
Nikon FE SLR
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G
Nikkor 24-120 f/3.5-5.6
Nikkor DX 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 VR(I used this strictly for video because of the VR)
Tamron 70-200 f/2.8
Samyang 14mm f/2.8
Sigma 28mm f/2.8 Mini-Wide II
Nikon 50mm f/2
Tokina 24-70 f/4

Lowe pro Pro-runner 300W
Vanguard Skybourne 45
Vanguard Up-rise 28
Crumpler bag of some sort
Old shitty tripod that I need to replace.

I think that's it.

Got a Photo printer from a frend (bought new cartridges), wasted 7 sheets of Glossy and semi trying to get it to print colours correctly, no anvil. Still printing with streaks and shit, and I don't know what to do. It's pissing me off so much.

Do you guys have mostly new or used gear? I have mostly used gear.
D80
18-55 vr
50mm 1.8G
70-300 vr

And the rest of my gear is new;
Memory cards
Tripod

So do you guys buy mostly new or used gear?

Oh, and I slept and my photo printer fixed itself magically.

Congrats dude! The D7000 is insane.
I might change mine out for a D600 or a D800 sometime in the future. Propbably not until mid-late 2013 though.
Gotta get a Nikon 24-120 f/4, some computer parts and a car first. :P

Congrats trum_15! I am on a list at Allen's camera for a refurbished D700. Once they get one in they are going to give me a call, super excited! Also over the summer I was working with a wedding and portrait photographer in my area and he decided to pick me up as a second shooter for next spring.

Here is a shot I took last night when I was watching the leonid meteor shower

The only thing that is similar to that one is the Handy boxes as bar ends. The carrige/dolly is made from aluminum L brackets, a simpson tie plate, and skate board bearings. I am also going to motorize it with a r/c helicopter servo and going to control it with a camera intevalometer so I can sync it with my camera.
