Figured it's just easier to link that than actually insert images while posting from my phone :P. All taken with a D3000 and its kit lens, although I'm looking in to a 35mm 1.8 and a 70-300 (VRII preferably) as soon as I have some money to throw around.
You seem to like those light lines and shapes in your photos.

haha I really do enjoy doing light painting or what ever they call it. But usually I only do it in pictures that are just of light painting but I thought it made the marker picture stand out :)

The picture is composed nice, but it is a little on the grainy side.

Have you over sharpened it?
Or is it just that the D3000 isn't as ISO tolerant as a D3100
I remember being able to put it up to 800 before it became a problem.

The D3000 is pretty good up to 800, but it is pretty noticeable if you try to go higher. At 800 it does pretty well though IMO.

Considering the picture above has ISO 400 it doesn't look like it.
This is of course unless he added any grain or extensive sharpening in Photoshop.
That is around the same amount of grain I get at ISO 2200 with my D7000. Maybe even more.

I dunno, just speaking from experience with my own D3000...

EDIT: also I don't know about that particular picture as I'm currently at my phone and can't really judge the image anyway. Just saying that at ISO 400, the D3000 shouldn't really be giving any significant graininess.

So today I missed the sunset :( Got stuck in traffic and missed it by a good 20 minutes. But the good thing about sunsets is they happen everyday! lol. However I did make it to the light house and got a picture there. Its a nice clear night with lots of stars so the picture is of the light house with stars over it. I had to use the 50mm to get the stars so it is a bit of a limited view but still not a half bad picture. Also It was pitch dark out there so the lighting on it is not the best either. I just have to upload it and then I will post it up.

Edit- Here it is! Even though its a limited view all I am missing is the door and a couple steps. I might have been able to get the steps and door from a different angle but it was freezing out and I personally think the stars give the picture a nice extra something. Not perfect but still a pretty nice picture :)

Make sure your lens is clicked into autofocus as well. Even if your camera tries to autofocus, it can't do anything if the lens isn't working with it.

From experience with my d50 if its set on auto focus and its not able to focus in on anything then it wont shoot. Usually this happens in low light conditions.

^ I had the same issue with my D50, which is why I always used manual focus. I could focus it in on something that I wanted to shoot in the dark with flash, meanwhile the AF would never focus or shoot because there wasn't enough light illuminated what I had in the viewer.
