Authorities say a 17-year-old Michigan boy was fatally shot in rural Central Indiana, as he and his father and three siblings were playing paintball in a wooded area.

Indiana conservation officers say Brandon J. Spangler of Flushing, Mich., was pronounced dead at the scene southeast of Indianapolis shortly after noon Friday. He was in Indiana visiting during school break with his father, Mark Spangler, Greenwood, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The shooting occurred in a wooded area near County Road 550 West, about three miles south of Ind. 44, in Shelby County.

Shelby County Deputy Coroner Robby Stonebreaker pronounced the boy dead at the scene of one or more gunshot wounds.

The investigation is continuing, but authorities said it was believed Mark Spangler and four children, including the shooting victim, had permission to use the wooded area for paintball activities, according to the release.

Witnesses told investigators that the gunshots came from an area home. The father and surviving children were taken to a hospital for observation.

Wow, that really sucks. They say it came from an area home, any update on why? Did someone accidentally discharge their gun while cleaning it? Did someone shoot the kid on purpose? Was someone trying to shoot the dad and missed? Sure are a lot of unanswered questions so far.

Actually, I'm pretty sure any redneck knows more about firearm safety and proper use better than you do. You'd be more likely to shoot off a stray round than a redneck. At least the ones I know have been born with a gun in their hand, and have learned the safe way to use and shoot one before they could walk. Do you even know which end to point away from you?

what a terrible story

I know I don't like in the thick of the woods, but I hear bushes rustling behind my house all the time. The last thing I'd do is blindly fire into the woods, not knowing who or what is back there. There is a TON of blame to be placed all the way around. The shooter for not identifying his target, the people who were playing paintball who didn't notify the property owner they were going to be there... holy shit

In the early 1990's, I played alot of renegade ball on tons of private land. And the owners of the land ALWAYS knew when we were going to be playing, and when we were going to be leaving.

What kind of markers were the family shooting?

Milsim markers can look real from a distance. If I saw three people in the bushes behind my home with what looked like assault rifles, I'd be a little trigger happy too.

Still, target identity must be established before shooting a firearm at someone. That homeowner is an idiot and should be charged.

update:

A teenager was shot dead while playing a paintball game after the landowner mistook him for a coyote.

Flushing High School senior Brandon Spangler, 17, was in rural Indiana on Friday with his family when he was shot in the shoulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The property owner Jason Bagley, 41, from Shelbyville, said he had given the Spangler family permission to use his wood for paintballing but was not aware they were coming that day as they did not call ahead.

What the fuck?

I don't know of a single state that has coyote hunting. This guy should get jail time. You don't fucking mistake a player for a mother fucking coyote, and if you are you cannot legally get off with "I forgot teh glasses" because then you are illegally operating a firearm and should still go to jail.

"

He told police he fired shots into the woods on his property using a hunting rifle after hearing a disturbance he thought was a coyote attack.

At the time Brandon, his father and three brothers were unloading equipment from the car."

The owner should definitely face punishment of some kind. He discharged a firearm into the woods at something he heard with out making sure what he was shooting at. That is the definition for negligent discharge of a firearm.

They were by a car, not even playing. There is no excuse.

Wow guys, It was his land. They didnt call ahead of time to let the owner know they were going to play, therefor the owner was not expecting people on his land. Now sure he should have made sure, but he had no reason to think it was humans. Also in Texas it is legal to hunt coyotes, so coyote "hunting" does exist.

No reason to think it wasn't a human is still no reason to discharge a firearm without knowing what you are shooting at.

That is gun safety 101. I'm a hunter myself and that literally is the first thing you teach a kid when you are showing them to use a firearm. "Make sure you know what you are shooting at. Look behind what you are shooting at in case the bullet passes through. Don't put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot." These are all simple simple simple concepts and are the very foundation of gun safety.

I have also shot coyotes myself. They can be very dangerous to deer.

Surprisingly, this happens a lot. That is why you are supposed were orange vests while in hunting areas. Its not that hard to mistake someone in camo from a far distance who is moving around as an animal. Not saying this guy shouldn't face consequences, but it will happen. Then again, we don't even know if it was a hunting accident.

Fact remains, shots were fired at something that was not identified. Which means it is a negligent discharge. The shooter is a damned idiot. Private land or not, you do not shoot at a noise, this is not a war zone where that would be acceptable to a degree.

*anyone that has done any big game hunting knows that you don't always get ideal clear shots like you see in the movies often times you get blurs of what you think are animals ......you don't shoot at that because it could be a person and maliciously wounding a animal is not hunting its crap, you wait for good shots where you got a good chance of killing the animal humanely , and you don't risk killing a innocent

Coyotes are also in season for either most of the year or all year I cant remember. And can be shot with pretty much any round except deer slugs, they also can be shot using a lazer.
