LOWER ALSACE TWP., Pa. -A paintball shooting almost cost a 13-year-old boy his eyesight.
Jared Shaffer said he considers himself lucky. He was out with friends Monday afternoon when he suddenly found himself under attack, Shaffer said.
"Next thing I know I'm on the ground holding my eye, and I didn't know what I had got hit by or anything," said Shaffer.
Investigators said the paint ball shooting happened around 1:45 p.m. near a wooded area at Harvey Avenue and Butter Lane in Exeter Twp., Berks Co.
"I ran out of the woods screaming, 'I'm blind.'"
Luckily, Shaffer still has his sight, but it was still a close call.
Police photographs taken just after the incident show how white paint was still lodged in the corner of Shaffer's swollen left eye.
The Antietam Middle-Senior High School student said he couldn't see who the shooter was, but remembers a black shiny vehicle approaching.
"It gets me mad and upset," said Shaffer, "because when they drove off, all I heard was, 'Oh good! I hit him,' or something like that. I heard them laughing and stuff."
Doctors have prescribed several medications for Shaffer's eye. He said he is expected to make a full recovery.
In the meantime, Exeter police said they are looking for four teenagers who were driving a shiny black SUV-type vehicle.
