So he knew they were going to be out there, yet he assumed that it was a pack of coyotes rather than stopping to think that it MIGHT just be the family he let come on his land. Some dumbasses just shouldn't have guns because they don't fucking think.

From what I remember from reading the story earlier, he had given permission to the guys to use his land previously, but they didn't tell him they were on the property this time.

It's because he couldn't see what was causing the noise, but then that goes right into the rule of not shooting at something unless you can actually see it and know what it is that you're shooting at.

Regardless the owner of the property is going to be brought up on charges. How do you shoot in the direction of a vehicle being unloaded. That in itself sounds nothing like a "coyote." On top of that why would the guy being shooting at chest height. A coyote is at max 30" off the ground. The fact that this guy shot in a direction that he had no real idea what he was shooting at makes it seem like something is off. I understand that family didn't call ahead but that's no reason for this to happen. The owner of the property is giving both hunters and paintballers a bad name.

He mistook them for a pack of coyotes.
While they were unloading gear from their car.
And he knew that a family was coming to play paintball there.

I'm a big proponent of the right to bear arms. But I also think there is a huge responsibility involved, and unfortunately not everybody gets that or takes it seriously. Things like this are such a huge detractor to our second amendment rights, it makes me sick.

I dont know man thats kinda bogus and shouldnt be tolerated. You should atleast be giving out warning signals or something a warning shot? Before shooting. I can shoot into bushes in Chicago all day and hit as many people and just say sorry I thought it was another cougar roaming around. The point is that its not right and this guys deserves to be punished

Since it appears that you didn't fully read/comprehend the article, he couldn't see or hear clearly what was happening. That does not excuse his actions, but he did not believe he was shooting at people.

These people went ahead & decided to enter private property unannounced & make a ruckus.
While the farmer is an idiot for not checking at what the hell he was firing at I don't know if he can be held totally responsible.
As a farmer he has a right to protect his assets..in this case from "coyotes".
If this guy gets a decent lawyer worst I can see is involuntary manslaughter.

bad troll is bad.

Anyway, Most likely it will end in a civil suit rather than criminal, This is one of those confusing cases where there really is no one person at fault. Precautions should have been taken more seriously on both sides. They should have called, he should have followed proper shooting techniques. Negligence on both sides caused a terrible accident.

It doesn't matter whether the property owner was expecting them or not. He shot at an unknown target and killed a kid.

What if it was a lost hiker?

What if it was a neighbor's dog?

What if it was your own son looking for something he threw out?

My point is... Don't shoot at unknown targets! PERIOD!

What if it was a rabid dog ?

-snip-

He made a stupid mistake & I'm horrified that something like this could happen.
& as a gun owner I'm pissed that anyone could take something so dangerous so lightly.

My personal feelings aside
The facts are he accidentally shot a trespasser.
Am I happy some poor kid got shot ? Fuck no.
Should he be punished ? Definitely ,
Do I feel two lives should end over this mistake ?
No.

You disgust me. Some poor family is grieving over their 17 year old son/ brother/ cousin being killed, and some poor homeowner is thinking about how he killed a man and all you can think of is that you posted it first? Congratulation you sick fuck, you posted the story first, want a fucking cookie? +1 one internet to you good sir. My hat is off to you. I wish I could have posted this first. It disgusts me to think that someone would care so little to think that him posting the story first is anything that anyone gives one flying fuck about. You seriously show how inconsiderate some people can be.

What if it was a rabid dog ?

What if it was a crazed armed rapist looking to rape him & wear his skin Silence of the Lamb style.

What if it was al-Qaeda looking for weapons of mass destruction on his lawn :o

He made a stupid mistake & I'm horrified that something like this could happen.
& as a gun owner I'm pissed that anyone could take something so dangerous so lightly.

My personal feelings aside
The facts are he accidentally shot a trespasser.
Am I happy some poor kid got shot ? Fuck no.
Should he be punished ? Definitely ,
Do I feel two lives should end over this mistake ?
No.

I think you're mistaking my rage over the recklessness as meaning I think that it should be tried as a murder case or something, which I do not at all. The intent was not to harm anybody, so you can't treat it as that. It just pisses me off any time I hear a story like this, because to so many uneducated people, they'll read this article and immediately think, "See! This is why guns should be illegal!"

I think making the landowner speak at gun shows, gun safety courses, things like that, would be an appropriate part of the sentence. I'd rather see more people educated by this than to see the landowner killed or imprisoned for life.

Ah in that case I feel I owe you an apology.
I had assumed you like some of the other members who posted had some type of vendetta against this man who for all we know is a good natured law abiding citizen. The community service through public speaking is actually a great idea (on top of fines/loss of arms privileges/jail time) , we should all strive to keep things like this from happening in the first place.

Just another unfortunate case where various people fuck up on their respective responsibilities and something bad happens. In this case the family failed to call ahead and notify the land owner that they would be there that day, and the land owner failed to identify his target, and the end result being that some poor kid ended up dead.
It's a trap! -Admiral Ackbar, a long long time ago.

(Rule # 1) never shoot into brush or anything of that matter with out observing it or it's surroundings first...

ok he said he knew the family and gave the ok to play paintball on his land...so why knowing that it could of been them instead of a coyote did he not call out asking who or what was in the brush first?

also they make animal call's for a reason he could of got a coyote call for hunting and easily avoided this. gun's don't kill people, people who misuse them do.

Dang, this is pretty bad. There is no excuse for shooting into a bush just because you saw something move.

I hope this guy is revoked his privilege to posses a firearm, possibly more.
