For film SLR's, check local pawn shops and thrift stores. You can usually get cheap film cameras that will work great.

I shoot a yashica 200AF for film use. It's a pretty good camera but I don't have much to compare it too.

You mean a DSLR that has video recording?
Film means film in the camera world, not video tape. ;)

Us smartasses like to be very picky at those things. :D

The D3100 and 550D can all film, I dunno how much they cost new or used though, but they shouldn't be that expensive.

Yupp. You need a 550D or a D3100 for recording video. The 550D(T2i) is better for video than the D3100.

D90 is a kickass camera, not the best video, but the picture part is better than the other ones listed.

But I thought it had a lower image quality than the d5100?

how bout this,
t2i vs t3i vs d5100 vs d3100
i would probably be filming 1/4 - 2/5ths of the time(a little less than half the time), the other times i would be talking live pics of moving objects (like taking pics of my friends band, sports, waves) and i would also take pics of scenery.
i was thinking about getting the T2i and this SD card
thoughts?

I honestly would rule out the Nikon d3100 i can't speak for your other choices, but if your going to take video. The auto focus motor is quiet loud when in video mode.

I would go with the t2i. I believe it has an external microphone port too.

Here's is one cheaper

http://www.digitalre...550d/ODExMA_A_A

and if you go down to the packages there is a deal with a 50mm 1.8 lense and a few more accessories. for $715

You won't be using autofocus in video.
Manual is 100x better.

What's better for pics
What's better for price
Better for video
Better for use (like easy to see if focused)

Better for the price? The D5100 isn't much more worth than the 550D(I hate the rebel names from Canon)in performance.
If the D5100 gets a firmware update to support 60fps recording in 720p they will be way to similar in video capabilities.

Quality wise Nikon isn't behind Canon on video any more. A D5100 got beautiful video, even when compared to the 600D(T3i).
But Canon has that manual microphone adjusting, and that is quite important for serious videographers.

Both take stunning photographs for their price. And both have good viewfinders and live view.

What do you want? Canon or Nikon? That what it boil down to here. In the future what cameras do you want to upgrade to.
Semi-pro Canon has the 7D and Nikon has the D7000 or the D300s. Even though the D7000 is a "consumer" model, it still performs better than the D300s which is a "pro" model(The D7000 is a brand new model, bumped up a notch, the D300s is just a re-hash of the D300, which is a little old)

What type of lenses do you want? Nikon's pro lenses or Canon's L lenses?

To start? Kit lense. Then will probably get like a 55-200. I'm still not really sure if I'm going to do it or not thought.
