If I've got a i5-2400, radeon 6870 and 8 gb ram, that should max out a game with these specs right?

It's all about the game and how you play it, All about control and if you can take it
All about your debt and if you can pay it, It's all about pain and who's gonna make it

Depends on the game. But yes, in theory it should.

Guild Wars 2

I'm hoping to get ultra high in PVE and high during PVP

Well, I would go so far as to say you could run it on ultra high, but you should definitely be able to run it on high.

The only room I really have to work with is that I could get a i5 2500k for only like 30 more bucks, would that push me into a more comfortable range?

Nah, that wouldnt make much of a difference, most of the difference necessary for any game is the graphics card, the i5 core you have planned should work. (the 2500k just allows overclocking, which is definitely not necessary in games.)

It will be able to run on high, It should on ultra...

Actually incorrect. For most MMO's, the CPU and amount of RAM is going to help a lot more. The only reason being, most of the graphics in the game is being done server side. And you're only rendering what your character is doing.

Yea, cpu is going to be pretty important to this game. I've been talking to some people on a game based forum and they said the only place I may suffer is during large fights in server vs server PvP which I'm fine with. Even then it shouldn't bump me past the low end of high settings. Pretty sure I'm gonna go with an 15 2400 since I probably wont be overclocking because it appears at most it will only get me a few more FPS. Thanks for the help guys

So I got offered a part time summer job today as well as the fact that I totally forgot about my tax return, so I now have some room to play with.

What would be the best component to upgrade? I was thinking a 2gb 6950. It does slightly better than a 560ti and 2gb ram should help with high res texture on a 1920x1080 correct? Seeing as I don't have experience or replacement money to buy a replacement (should I screw up), a 560ti doesn't seem like the best option.

2GB 560x2 if you have the money would be the best option. While I do have an ATI card myself, I hate the driver problems they harbor.

edit: so after further thought and research I've decided that a 6870 more than meets my needs. I think I'd rather just have the extra money instead of extra power I wont need.
