it looks cool
for paintball it should display your PSI, and how much paintballs are left in your hopper, and?
what else?
put this in your sig. if you are under 18 and pay for everything paintball related, gear, entry, air, paint.

You don't really need that stuff in a paintball mask. The goggles (I assume the ZEAL ones, link is to slow) display stuff like altitude and speed which are both really useful (altitude) and interesting to know (speed). I guess you could put in like a range finder or something, that wouldn't really help. Maybe a hopper counter to tell you how many balls you have etc. They already have boards that tell you your ROF, I don't really see much room for expansion.

Think about the implications for refs and such. Have ROF integrated into their mask so they don't ever have to take their eyes off the game. And have player status in there so they know exactly how many people are on the field dead and alive.

If big games and scenarios came with a downloadable map that linked to a HUD with GPS, that would be nice. Squad leaders could keep track of their squads in relation to other squads and Generals could keep track of their armies. When a squad or scout finds an objective, they could radio the info to the General who could highlight their position on everyone's HUD.

I think it'd really help with logistics.

I'd love that, really. If I could just ref and have a few numbers on my lense to make sure no one is breaking 12.5, I'd love it.

It would end a lot of bullshit that goes on

The only problem I see is the added weight to the mask, and the HUD distracting you during snapshooting.

What SHOULD (Not will, but ideally should) come with the goggles:

GPS Tatical Field View,
Buddy Location System,
Night / Thermal Vision,
Ammo Counter,
Battery life indicator,
Built in walkie talkie system,
Hopper / Eye status indicator, (Jammed / on / off)
Chronograph, (great for ref's to see who's shooting hot)
Video Recording / uploading system,
Color Changing, (Can change paintball colors to be brighter and easier to spot)
Motion outlining system (Outlines any body sized moving targets brightly)
Objective indicator,
Player count,
Fire rate indicator,

(all i can think of now.)

This system would revolutionize play and ideally make this a much more friendly and controlled sport.

All of that would at least be $4,000 for a pair. Plus some of those things don't even exist yet.

More probably, the goggles listed (still assuming zeal, the link won't open) cost something around $550. Plus they're experimental, they could end up costing more. I know a ZEAL rep and he said that they are fragile, heavy, don't feel good on your face, and overpriced. Plus the battery life is only about 8 hours, so you'll be burning through batteries.

"Ideally" :P Not saying their going to be cheap, not 4 grand however, the ones in the video are listed as 350-450$ (as below), and contain night vision and alot more features then i listed.

Again as always, kinks to be worked out.

Dont exist? or so you think...

Basically what they said:
"Available this fall for between $350 and $450, Transcend goggles are a partnership between two companies: Zeal Optics and Recon Instruments. The result is a pair of goggles that contain hardware to measure speed, altitude, time, temperature and GPS coordinates—a slew of information that's displayed through a HUD. Charging and data transfer occurs over USB.

Buttons on the side of the goggles will allow you to scan through information on the ski lift, which will be especially useful as Transcend gains additional promised functions, including trail maps, cellphone display integration and video recording."

And theres a short video of all the crud it will have.

They say night vision is coming soon, notice the COMING SOON part. They don't have it now they won't have it for along time. The military hasn't developed anything that compact yet, and you can bet that they're working their asses off trying to develop something like that.

I wouldn't mind a kill count, but that would rely on the accuracy of the input of players who have other things to focus on.

The problem with anything that overlays info into your visible environment based on where your looking is that it requires real time processing of data from some kind of camera, as well as something that determines the geographical direction you are facing. These would require heavy on board hardware until technology progresses a ways.

The most useful things I can think of that I think are currently feasible are:

game timer
This would be very simple.

Friendly locator.
Using a compass and a gps, the HUD could roughly indicate which direction another locator device is, but only in 2 dimensions. The same system could be used to create static gps way-points.

Something very simple that would be useful would be a team body count function, where when you get out, you push a button and it tells the rest of the HUDs that there is one less teammate alive.

Doubt it would be legal as it is after-elimination communication, and it would be ripe for abuse.

I don't know man. I kind of don't want any of this to become so complex that the player has to depend on the goggles just to stay in the game.

All it needs is body count, hopper count, and a camera to record, and I'm good. For the love of Paintball, nothing more.

Body count can be controlled through a coach on the sideline or the lights they use on the PB Access broadcasts, though sometimes those are inaccurate, it's still a possibility. Hopper count would just have to have some sort of computer used in the loader. I'm sure it's possible. Just a lot of work. But please, keep the rest of paintball traditional. I do NOT want to see this become a technology based sport (and by that I mean past markers, loaders, and tanks). That would kill it for sure.

I don't think for the rec scene it would be too practical. But for tournament players and refs, I think it would be really useful. And I'm thinking mostly for the refs.
