Hey guys, I need some help on deciding on a laptop. The high school I'm going to uses Macs, so for my first computer, I'm getting a Macbook. I'll be really just doing recreational stuff on it, like web, e-mail, schoolwork, and maybe some photo and video work. I'm not super tech-savvy, so could someone tell me if it's more worth it to get the current Macbook Pro, or get the 2012 version (Retina edition)?

Thanks!

Don't spend the ridiculous amount of money on the Retina display. You'll never need that resolution, ever.

What does it matter? They are both the same. One has a better screen and the other is cheaper

Blade's right. Aside from SandyBridge and the retina. Not much has changed. Save the money and go buy some strippers or something.

I think I'm going to end up getting the current Macbook. I mean, it still has a stunning display regardless, and I won't be pushing my computer's capabilities to the limits anyway.

Being 14, I can only laugh at these responses.

Isnt the whole Retina display just a bunch of Apple marketing...

"stunning display".... yea, nope..

If you/your parents have a hole burning in their wallets, go buy it..
Just get the regular one, use the saved money on something a bit more useful

Lets not start any Mac hate threads.. Im trying to say it from the stand point of like the Devils Advocate..

I'm going to the Apple Store really soon, and checking both out. I may just get the last model, unless the new one really wows me.

Pretty much from the factory, all Macs come with a super glossy display.. the Matte display isnt glossy at all, it wont be a mirror rather then a monitor..
If there was any light above or behind you, youd have to turn up the screen brightness just to se ewhat your actually doing.. with the matte display, its all good..

Actually, get the matte display.
Laptops with matte displays have more expensive screens because gloss is cheap, matte is expensive.

I'm in the same boat as the OP.
However, when I go to the apple website and look at it I can't see a matte screen as an option. Is it something you have to ask for in store or something?

Just wondering, if you're just going to be reading emails and such why not just pick up a cheap laptop? You could always run a virtual box with whatever OSX version you want.

Sorry, I didnt realize he absolutely couldn't use anything else. I'm homeschooled so whatever lol. I didn't know how hard it would be to use something else, and besides, virtual boxes FTW Posted Image But honestly, I dont understand why highschools use macs and ipads for school. Pretty expensive for the simple tasks they're for...

I may end up picking up the new one, because I'm not doing heavy work and using tons of storage, so 256GB of Flash storage is fine by me, and I'm hardly ever going to use discs, so I can pick up an optical drive in the future. My aunt uses Macs and Macbooks every day at work, so I'll be talking to her soon.

I like the Mac because of the simplicity of it, and that OS X is simply stunning in regard to how intuitive it is.

Also, to whoever asked about the matte display, I researched it, and it's an add-on that you can get if you buy online.

I wouldn't go so far as to say OSX is intuitive. But it is highly more functional than most other UNIX based OS'.

It runs alright, but I'm the kind of guy who likes everything really simple. I can work on PCs, and I'm a little "tech-savvy", but in no way can I REALLY do advanced things.

ROFL, you guys took this the wrong way..
wasnt supposed to be an anti mac post, just with all my experience with Macs, and people who buy macs.. i hear that alot.. they think windows is super complicated haxor shit... not really.. both are just as simple.. Ive had more issues with Macs, due to some weird menus shits.. and no right clikc on the laptops..

Neither was i saying, that you shouldnt buy it.. If you dead set on buying it for some reason, and you have the cash, go buy one.
Silly Internet peoples jumping to conclusions, its ok

and why wont you order online? and pick it up from teh store..
The matte screen really is a nice addition, try one out at the store (if they have one)

That was the dumbest thing I've read this week. Yes, some PCs are overpriced (macs are PCs, but whatever, semantics), like alienware, falcon NW, etc. But even those are a bargain compared to macs. They're fucking horrible compared to a PC at the same price point. You're paying something like 50% more for a fancy case and a name.

Statistically speaking, Macs do perform better than say Windows, being that they're Unix based. Though, compared to say Linux, there is quite a hindrance.

Until a Java Virus destroys your whole Mac, and you cant do shit now.. Except buy a new one.

(Ferrari Comment)

a Mac is fine for Facebook, twitter, youtube, forums.. once you push out of that and get into any forms of work..(not word documents) The only Mac that can compete is a 10k+ Mac Pro, that has a Xeon.. (In Cinebench that gets a score of ~10)
Lets use my Pc as an example.. only cost 1.7k (only, lol) yet i can pull a 13.33 in cinebench..

if you dont know what Cinebench is, its a benchmarking software designed by the company Maxon, which puts out programs like Cinema 4d, as a way to test how well a computer can Render visuals..

Im useing the CPU score right now..

a slightkly better comparison would be the Mac being teh Honda, and on the PC side you have like an Upped Mitsubishi Evo or Subaru STI (almost upped to be comparable to most Rally cars out there)
tehy both can get you places, but if you want o get there are a new pace, one of those will perform better.. unless the user screws up

Still op kid, try out the Matte screen.. really nice in any room with light compared to teh overly glossy stock ones

Darn, my $900 build only got a 5.43 on the Cinebench CPU test, and a 69.07 on the OpenGL test... Darn you slow cheap i5-2500 and POS HD Radeon 6870 Posted Image.

But in all seriousness, to get the same specs on a Mac Pro, as my $900 build, it'd cost $2,774 Posted Image

My Feedback +14/-0

Considering my CPU cost 600... dont blame your processor.. the 2500k would have been a better option (OC to 4.0, and leave it there) but its what we feel we need, that governs what we buy..

Yea computer stuff is mostly just based on your budget, or what you feel you will need... Deffinatly explains why i spent 600 on just the CPU
