As you should know, a manual transmission is the greatest of transmissions. Easier to work on, cheaper to own, cheaper to buy, the list goes on.

This club is for those who drive a REAL car!

Post up what you've got, and why you love manual.

Also post of a picture of your car, and prove it's a manual!

06 Ford Ranger XLT with a 5 speed. No camera, so no pictures.

Or, you can count my motorcycles. Not like there are any transmission options there, but they ARE manuals, in a way.

I will laugh as they overwhelm our enemies in a flurry of spotted banana hammocks.

I'm teaching a girl how to drive manual this weekend.

Hopefully my car will get me the girl.

It's fun to teach a girl manual.

But not when she grinds the gears.

It's happened. She forgot to press the clutch... a little bit of grinding done. At least she had common sense to stop and say "That didn't sound right".

I say yes! Automatic bikes do exist. Right now they seem to only be very small dirtbikes and very expensive touring/cruisers, but they do exist.

That being said, I own a 1985 Suzuki GS550L with a 6-speed. Doesn't run right now (needs carbs), but it does have a brand new paintjob in the works while it is at my machine-shop.

This is what it looked like when I bought it.

This is what it looks like now (mostly).

Posted Image

That is Duplicolor Metallic Burnt Orange with a splash of flake in the base clear-coat, all airbrushed on. Pictures do it no justice...

For my enclosed vehicle, I have a 1994 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0L I6 and a 5-speed. I don't have any recent pictures of it or a picture to "prove it", but the transmission is an AX-15 bolted to a NP231 transfer-case, it has no synchros in reverse so it always has a small amount of grind unless you push the clutch in and wait for 5 seconds, I am happy that the slave-cylinder is externally mounted to the bell housing which makes changing it and it's fluids a breeze, and right now it has the cheap Auto-zone LED novelty shift knob instead of the OEM one because the previous owner was a hick. It is half broken and would activate itself randomly and piss me off, so I took a center-punch to the button and broke it so it doesn't light up anymore. I was going to craft myself a new awesome one from scrap in the shop: turn it on a lathe, tap it, and stamp a shift pattern up top, but I haven't had the free time to do it yet and I can't decide if I should do stainless, brass, or delrin plastic.
The brass would be cool but not match anything else in my truck, the steel would be cool but be very hot in summer and very cold in winter, and the delrin would feel the best but be the least snappy. Any suggestions?
Also, if it counts as proof I'll upload a pic of the knob I make.

Hell, if anyone wants me to make a shift knob for them let me know and I can probably quote you a price. All I would need is thread size/pitch, a material, a shift pattern, a diameter, and a shape (ball or cylinder or whatever). Let me make mine first and see how it goes so I get an idea of what's involved and how well it comes out, then I'll let you all know if I'm up for the extra work. The shop is busy right now which means I'd have to come in on the weekend to do these, and if it's too time costly I don't think I'll want to do it.

Why I love driving standard... I could go on and on about this. Let me give you guys the short list:

More control over the vehicle, the extra speed over the auto-trans of the same vehicle means I get better gas mileage, Jake-braking means I save on brake wear/fade, it's easier to service the trans, it means I can actually break the tires loose on my truck and burn out pretty well into second gear (yes it is possible on such a vehicle, yes I've done it, yes it was dry pavement, and yes it was awesome!), I can accelerate faster than other vehicles of my type, since most people these days can't drive stick it means I'm relatively safe from car-jacking or GTA, and last but definitely not least, it's freaking cool and I enjoy operating a manual trans vehicle!

Just for good measure, a pic of me hooking my truck up with a cat-delete + glasspack for an exhaust.

Sounds a little buzzy at higher RPMs, but I like the overall sound and the volume. I'm gonna get a CherryBomb Extreme and a set of headers for it next summer. I'll be driving the bike around so I'll be saving on gas enough to splurge on some truck mods. Also on the list is a lift kit and tires, as well as a to-do list involving patch-work, armor, bumpers, tow-points, overhead storage, in-bed toolbox, roof rack, and light-bar that I'll be fabricating myself. Might toss on a Mack truck/train horn for fun as well as a PA for the CB radio. Will it all get there next year? Probably not. But I should have a lot of it.

My truck is a stick shift. I just wish the pull length between gears wasnt like half a mile. Going from 4th to 5th I almost run out of arm to move it.
