Figured I would join the thread, I have a 98 Camry that is destined to die.

Long story short is that I got my oil changed, the mechanics fucked up and not my rod bearing is cracked. This just gives me an excuse to get an S13 fastback but now I need to find $7,000 laying around.

They make safety glasses/goggles for a reason.

There has been a process of thawing and freezing around here lately which has made some of the roads just pure (skatable) ice at night. I was cruising around in the M3 and conveniently forgot to put traction control back on after I was doing some electronics testing... that was fun. I basically powerslid through an entire on ramp - successfully. Let loose 400hp on ice!

well in the last two weeks i have nearly killed myself over the mr2.

first, on valentines day, it threw a rod bearing. junked the 1zz engine in it. 30k miles on it ....

so i buy a 2zz-ge swap kit and pay a shop to swap it (it is below zero here).

first problem with that swap, is the heat doesn't work, no matter how much you bleed the coolant. it basically can't be bleed, you have to hook up a vacuum to to heater core bleeder, and such the air out ... rediculous

second problem is we could never get it to idle properly. always bouncing or holding a high idle. eventually figured it out, but yikes ... what a PITA.

runs good now, very fun to drive with 190 hp in a 2100lbs mid engined car. a little pocket lotus elise now ...

ive already had it out, but now that the spyder is running, it will probably be in the garage for about 2 more weeks. it was litterally dangerious to drive with BFG rivals on it, in 0 deg F and ice and snow.

the spyder is now a genuine fast car. that 2zz motor, wowsa. 0-60 in 5 flat, its a pocket lotus elise essentially. honastly, its faster point to point on a twisty road then the porsche is. its crazy quick. the only real thing different between it and the lotus is the lotus is about 100 lbs lighter, and has double wishbone front suspention compared to macpherson struts. crazy ....

Imagine the acceleration if you get a shorter one ;)
Top speed is boring compared to that.

Anyways. A little Saab detailing to make the day whole.

more shifting, less time on cam.

longer gears make for better utilization of the power curve. when you are waiting for power (either cam or boost), you want a nice long gear box. porsche did this with original turbos as well.

Depends on the track I suppose. Though when it comes to shredding 911's on a tight track you need your power right away. A 500hp GT3 is gonna pass you on a straight anyway but you'll take him in the corner with 200-ish horsepower in a tranaxle Porsche.

You have to find a balance though, you can have a super short gearbox and spend more time on the clutch than on the gas.

a boxster and cayman maybe, but not a 25 year old 3000+ lbs with semi-trailing arm rear suspension 944/968.

the front fours were better track cars then the 911s of there era, but a modern GT3 will decimate any of them.

Of course I'm not talking about a new GT3.
But a 968CS or a 951S should give a fair fight to a 993 GT3.

If I were to chose, as much as I like those front fours, I'd still have a 993 though.

my girlfriend's driveway is just like a singularity of car problems for me.

1zz in the spyder blew up after picking her up.
2zz threw check engine light at me after picking her up.

porsche just sheared off the half shaft bolts after dropping her off last night.

not a terribly hard or expensive repair ... but gah .... can never get ahead. i think i need to break up with her.

its a common problem, that seems worse on the turbos. but you might want to check them out on your 968. the drive shaft bolts tend to vibrate themselves a little loose, and then fatigue and fail. i have not tightened mine since last summer, so thats probably why.

i was doing a particularly hard launch when it happened .... just "bang" and then no power hahaha.
