My local field is potentially acquiring 1000 railroad ties. Trying to brainstorm some ideas for a new field. We have access to a backhoe and the ground is flat open field. One idea was above ground trenches. If anyone has seen ties used in different ways for building or has links to pics, post up.

What about digging trenches and using them to line the walls of them?

Someone say castle?

I second the motion.
Castles are cool

Using a gun that's been hardly maintained and tossed from person to person more than a village whore is hardly a fair way to compare the marker.

I would love to dig trenches but the ground gets too wet.

Someone say castle?

I like the castle idea also but how far will 1000 go?

probably not very far, but the secret is to use skids. Most companies will give skids away for free but the hard part is transporting them. Castle are awesome I just had to throw that out there :)

Or you could do a "defend the wall" sort of thing, where you put 8 or 9 down in a row, then leave a space empty, then put 8 or 9 down, and so on until you have a wall with little "archer"slits.Put a flag 20 or 30 feet in front of the wall, and scatter some bunkers made of ties on their sides,so that the opposing team has to try and get the flag.

Could just use them for support beams/posts, and use cheaper/thinner wood for the actual walls. Of course that means finding more wood, but it's the only thing I can think of. If you use them this way 1000 will go very far.

Question: When you have a paintball field and you build forts, especially with upper levels/ladders/stairs... do you have to build them according to a building code? Do they have to be inspected before they can be used and such? I mean bunkers are pretty harmless, but I've seen some fields that practically have houses, and of course the first thing I think is, "I wonder if they're built sturdy enough to not collapse."

Are the ties slippery and contaminated? You can trench and use them as flooring for it.

They will be used ties. I can speculate they will be slippery when wet.

Well some are corrosive and not good for bunkers or such. The slippery ones usually are that style.

This has been around at Splat Tag (the main local field for scenario stuff in MN/WI) for a few years, and it's really fun to play. There's more course you don't see and basically the whole thing is made out of railroad ties.
(Pictures are like 2 posts down, and throughout the entire thread)

because i have to outdo wicker77: http://www.orbitalpa...03/Default.aspx

competitiveness aside it would be awesome to make a big wall and arch with them, and one team has to get through the arch to win :)

Me and a few friends got some railroad ties and we built a pillbox in the woods we play in, and we shingled the roof with leftover stuff, it's pretty legit. we use it for attack and defend games

That thing would be so bad ass in scenarios. I could just imagine 2 teams having an object in that fort. 500 people going at it! Oh god.....

We did this with the ties, shingled the roof and threw dead brush on top to help waterproof it. surprisingly it stays dry inside there.

and yes i know it looks sketchy. lol

This is the former Special Ops Paintball field, now named Retribution. Not rail road ties but similar.

Then there's the famous Sherwood Forest:

There are lots of different things you can do but these might help.

Simple Lincoln log style bunkers... 2 or 3 walls each bunker. 1000 would make you a pretty big field. Adventure Beach in the Carolinas has a few of those on their firebase field.

Just bury them all vertically staggered all over the place. Could create a fun game requiring angles. I love fields where I can see SO much but have very limited shots due to angles

^ This is interesting. Even spaced out(about 6 feet or so) if you lined them up in various patterns, when approached at a specific angle they'd line up to create a wall. It wouldn't be obstructive but it'd put an interesting dynamic into the game if it was done well.

Research Sherwood Forest. I believe ALL their buildings are made of railroad ties, including the 3 STORY CASTLE. I'm sure you could find pictures around.
