The slow upload speeds are due to balance types, and consumer demand. The packages for the average person are geared towards how people use things. If they give you faster upload, they need to reduce download speed. However, the bulk of the population isnt worried about uploads. They want downloads as fast as possible. People that are uploading alot are either doing illegal sharing, or are running a server. if you want to run a server, your ISP has packages for that, and/or can tune the balance.

I would know. I used to call them in all the time.

I know that. ;)
But that's why the copper cable sucks, you can only get so much out of it. Fiber can easily put 1000Mb/s up and down.

Most households in the US run off of a copper fiber hybrid. The fiber runs in the street, the the branches to your house are in copper. All cable internet in the US is this way, but there are true fiber solutions in many areas. When I worked with it, FiOs was one of the only names around. A couple other places offered fiber to the house, but then used digiboxes once it was inside the house. (effectively removing the entire point of bringing the fiber to the street) Either way, I would still regularly see 50 Mbps downsteam on a regular RG6 cable.

They have 1Tb/s fiber, or their developing it. I think I read an article somewhere.
But dont they also have 10GbaseT and 10Gbase-cx4 which is 10Gb/s over UTP and copper.

all my legos are stored at my parents hose... so that wont be happening....

With Cat 5e being phased out, and replaced by Cat 6 and and Cat 7, better speeds over copper are being achieved. But eventually copper wont be able to keep up because they will need to bump up the gauge.

Copper won't be able to keep up with fiber.

Fiberoptics use light signals, in other words it's fast as bloody fuck.

For now, and the near future, copper will be able to keep up. The problem is that at the speeds we are talking, copper wont go very long distances. Cat 7 is capable of incredible speeds, but only for like, 10 meters. (might even be less) That is the true beauty of fiber. Not that it is so much faster, but that it can keep the speed over distance.

Edit: Cat 7, not Cat 6

10GBaseT is rated for 100m over cat6.
Can't wait till fiber is easier and cheaper so I can fiber my house.

Sorry, I meant Cat 7. Cat 6 speeds are good, but not "incredible." I was typing fast, and fat fingered a 6 instead of a 7.

Makes more sense.
I can't believe we still haven't upgraded to 10GBase(insert cable type) as a standard yet

If you got the money for a computer that can handle 1000Mb line sure. Not to mention the cost of that itself.

Apparently the only thing you need is a network card that supports 1000Mbps, and they're not that expensive. Google provides you with the rest of the hardware(box) and covers all the installation so unless you have an outdated laptop it's really not that expensive at all. However I'm also seeing CAT5 tops out at around 100Mbps so that will probably be an issue. I'm sure Google provides you with the alternative though.

Ya, can't say I bothered to look into it. That's why I just said "alternative." I have no idea what type of cables people probably have laying around the house that were packaged with routers/provided and such.

Even when I first started in structured cabling, we always used Cat 5e. And that was back in 2002. The only place I used anything other than Cat 5e was Sears, Target, and Wal-Mart for their phones, which, at the time, they used Cat 3 for. I dont think that I have ever even made a Cat 5 patch cord, lol.

Lol, its probably worse than dial up. So your argument is valid. Anything below dial up isn't classified as Internet, how's that?
