Hey guys, I just bought aSmart Parts Ion and I have questions:

1. Can it use Co2/HPA?
2. Does it shoot well if it is all stock (not upgraded at all)?
3. How many times of shooting the gun do I have to clean and maintain the gun?
4. What is the first upgrade that I should get? ($30 or less)

ALSO..

What are some good (thermal lenses) masks for less than $40??

  • I'd stick with HPA
  • It'll shoot fine. The board won't have every single mode ever, but it'll still shoot
  • It depends. You could probably get away with only cleaning and relubing every other time you played or so, or even less
  • The only thing I can think of would probably be a clamping feedneck.

Regarding the mask, up your price range by ten bucks and you can get a proto switch fs. Great mask IMO, I own one and it has never fogged and it covers my face really well, which is great since I have a big head.

Although Andrew have given you the answer to your questions, I have to at least expand on a couple:

1. Can it use Co2/HPA? Your best bet is to use only HPA unless you have a siphoning CO2 tank and even then I would not use it. Liquid CO2 going into the Ion will severely damage the solenoid.
2. Does it shoot well if it is all stock (not upgraded at all)? Shooting a bone stock Ion is fine in itself, but with some aftermarket parts (change the board, add a QEV, upgrade the bolt ... that is if you can find them) will increase air efficiency.
3. How many times of shooting the gun do I have to clean and maintain the gun? Depends on how well you are in taking care of your gear. If you have the original Ion where you have to take the whole thing apart to get to the bolt, maybe after every second or third day(weekend) of play. If you have the Ion XE where the bolt is easy to remove, then a simple swab would clean it right up with a decent amount of SP lube on all the o-rings.
4. What is the first upgrade that I should get? ($30 or less) Same thing in what Andrew said, clamping feedneck as opposed to the old style o-ring feed neck. If you can find a inline regulator for cheap, go with that as well.

Unfortunately, there are not many SP Ion upgrades anymore out there. Play with the Ion til you can save up for something newer or just stick with the Ion and take your time and ensure you know the ins and outs of that marker.

Gun upgrades: clamping feedneck and a good trigger
Other upgrades: a carbon fiber tank and a electronic hopper (I recommend the pinokio)
