While awesome, it's also stupid.

Stupid in a way that if you're not somebody you're nobody.

and that's stupid.

I'd say it's the other way around. Social networking has let many "nobodies" transform themselves into "sombodies."

Social networking actually provides the possibility of having friends outside of your geographical location, which for some is a really good thing as their offline social skills aren't so hot. It also satisfies humanity's thirst for instant gratification when it comes to information collection form their existing social circle.

If you are feeling like a nobody on your favorite social site, join a few groups that share the same interests as you. You will meet people from all over that are usually pretty like-minded and fun to talk to. Then you can build your friendship empire from there.

Good luck!

Why would you want to be a "somebody" on a social networking site anyway?

Why not do something actually worthwhile with your life rather than pandering to the deplorable cretins of the internet?

I meant as way to promote something, if you have no followers or whatever, if you want to promote something nobody will see.

Oh ok, I thought you were referring to wanting to be a waste of space like Ray William Johnson and iJustine on YouTube because popularity is cool or whatever.

If I were to be famous on youtube, I'd do something that's actually entertaining, like music.

Popularity is stupid without any form of sophistication, I guess you can say
