So one thing I've always wanted to be is... well rounded.

I've played sports all my life, I'm a fairly decent photographer and I'm a better filmmaker.

But I've never been good with music. So I decided to start learning bass. I just love the way bass sounds, and my friend told me he thinks I'd be good at it. So today he started teaching me, he is currently teaching me Enter Sandman by Metallica.

As my second song, I was gonna ask him to teach me Oceans (Where feet may fail) by Hillsong United. Do you think it's possible for someone to learn this as their second song?

Anything is possible with practice. Good luck, and keep at it.

Keep it up! Maybe Anesthesia(Pulling Teeth) is a good goal to work towards.

That song sounds pretty simple, I don't see why not.

First song I learned on bass was Aerials by System of a Down. It's relatively easy, and helps build your sense of rhythm which is key to bass playing.

I used to play bass.
I was never all that good at it, but could play a few songs like Seven Nation Army, Waiting For the Worms, and was starting to get a hang of the bass solo for Orion.

Eventually, I just lost my desire to play it (partially due to my switch from mostly rock music to electronic) and ended up selling my bass.

Learn to dance. Because you can dance if you want to. You can leave your friends behind. Because your friends don't dance and if they don't dance, well, they're no friends of mine.

I'm white, and you watch too much CDN.

Also, Antonious, isn't Seven Nation Army like, uber easy?

Never said it wasn't.
Like I said, I was never all that good at bass.

Id look for Tool for bass songs..

I never played bass, nor do I think I will.. trying to get drumming down.

I dont know how difficult the songs are, but they dont seem to technical or overly complicated...at least to me

How is the bass playing going?

And I will put this here for other bass players who haven't tried to lean this song yet:

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=UoLXtj0aCiM (it is a very short version of the song)

The guy's name is Victor Wooten and I've been trying to play many of his songs to varying success.

And I can't for the life of me remember that electric drummer's name! He's the one with the crazy homemade instrument. Yea that's right, he's the drummer.

This is a Victor Wooten song that he made off of finger-training exercises and by far one of the most inaccesible songs on bass there is: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=G7oCm-hZawQ

I WILL play that song one day! Thats how I've kept myself playing bass this long. That one long term goal made in middle school keeps me going to this day.

Picking a song and nailing it in a week is all good, but there needs to be progression beyond that to truly make yourself desirable as a bass player. You need to get those fingers fast enough to stun people during an audition! Mediocrity doesn't pay bills in the music world! Set the goals FAR higher than you think you are capable. If you follow up with enough diligent practice, you should be able to nail some spots on band and find out where you want to go from there.

As an aside: most of the songs i wanted to learn while i was leaning how to play bass seem silly to me now. keep your ears an mind open, because AMAZING bass players hide in very obscure genres

For any instrument, it is best to learn the basics and fundamentals before the actual songs. Ask him to teach you some exercises. I've been playing guitar with private lessons for about 9 years and I'm still learning new techniques.

Yeah, have you?

It appears the mediocrity is the key to success...

First song I learned on bass was radiohead-creep, then white stripes-seven nation army, then modest mouse-float on. All really easy songs to learn.
