What is a tank cover or tank butt for?

Im not sure about both I think the cover is to protect from scratches. Thank you in advance for your help.

Tank covers are pretty much just that, to cover and protect the tank. Tank butts are usually just for extra grip against the shoulder, since they're all pretty much silicone rubber.

Tank covers can be used as protection for the tank and tank grips are used to give yourself a bit of a grip on the tank. You could also pick up some tank covers that include a grip which is nice. I personally like the cover because of the fact that it feels easier to screw in and just has a overall nicer feel.
