To my knowledge the SMG was the 1st clipfed paintball gun produced by a major manufacturer, arguably the 1st milsim also.If you've never seen one in action I can tell you they were WAY ahead of their time, they're savage beasts,ROF was unmatched untill ramping electros were made.It was compact, light and maneuverable(for the time it was light),definitely put the pucker factor on the opposing team
I would love to see this iconic gun reborn with some modern updates and see magfeds made with Tippmanns durability, warranty, and customer service

I'd both love and hate to see that lol (more money would disappear from my wallet). It's always been one of those guns I always wanted. And I would Deffinetly be in line to pick one up.

I could easily see paying $500 or $600 with clips for 100 rnds or so included and a catch basket. And I would do so willingly (and I actually mean that), A updated 68.Cal Mechanical or electronic full auto clip fed beast. I love my Tacamo converted A5 but it did take a bit of modding to get sorted, AND a modern SMG 68 would be WAY WAY more fun. Mag fed is steadily growing there is a market for that kinda gun again and it's a lot easier to carry a bunch of stripper clips than a bunch of loaded mags. And with a catch basket on the side it be a lot cheaper than runnin a mag fed fun with a comparable amount of paint.

Make it run off the Phenom engine even. Mechanical semi auto and electronic full auto. That would still be just as cool. And offer far better consistency/efficancy and allow us to run HPA appose to siphoned Co2.

I really want to see this. Tippmann has made many products I have loved. Between my sister and i we have 5 Tippmanns 2 A5s, 1 TiPX, 1 SL-68II, and 1 Pro/Carbine. This would add one or two more to that list.

If they did it, it would be an electro made entirely of plastic, and use the 98 internals rather than the original.

They were special guns. Here's a pic for those who are unfamiliar.

The clips would fly off after expended and get lost.

they, like the ATS guns, are pretty horribly unreliable.

mechanical semi-auto nelson valve guns are just not a great idea in general.

EDIT: oh, wait, the SMG is that terrible damper slowed blowback .... ouch, thats an even worse design!

Edited by cockerpunk, 29 October 2013 - 05:46 PM.

The ultimate truth in paintball is that the interaction between the gun and the player is far and away the largest factor in accuracy, consistency, and reliability.

And yes, Gordon is the sexiest manifestation of "to the front."

Thanks for the pic Spyderand vid andrew

SMG would definitely need a modern valve setup, existing XVR\Phenom\TPX valve could fit the bill nicely

The real question is would you buy one for around $500?about the average price for a modern magfed platform, some of which use inferior valvetrains themselves

I mentioned that these could dominate when first strike came out if a compatible model was made. It was the first marker I thought of back then.

Not sure why they would even contemplate going to stripper clips again. EWW.

Just take the phenom valve, and shove in a hole under the breach to put a TPX mag in, Have a ASA from the frame and run a back bottled TPX mag'd marker. keep the body as slim and sleek as possible and you pretty much have a light and tight low profile point and shoot.

Well, the TPX already has the Phenom valve. it's just a little smaller.

EWW No. rails = hard to clean, annoying to keep clean, extra weight and overall useless. using the same mechanic as the TiPX breach it will be semi. unless you put in a cross over board

A gent on MCB did some sexy cad of a pump he wanted to make.
turn this into a back bottle Semi Auto, Easy deliciousness

well, the thing you have to remember is that the folks on MCB wouldn't buy it.

Because it would be a "re-release", and not one of the originals made 15+ years ago, they would have no interest in buying it. Now, if Tippmann was able to find a stash in a warehouse somewhere, and came across a lot of 200 of the original ones made 15+ years ago, then there would be some marginal interest on MCB. But a re-release made in 2014? No one on MCB would want it, except for maybe scrap parts for their own original SMG-68

Second, because of the fact that it's a mechanical gun, they would have to be extremely careful about the price point. No way they could sell the re-released SMG-68 for the same price the used ones are going for, which is usually $600+. So if they released it at $299.99, this would SEVERELY piss off the existing SMG-68 owners, as their value would be cut in half. History lesson - remember when Sandana re-released those sought after patterns that were selling for $200+, for $30? Remember how pissed off the "OG Sandana" owners were? Re-releasing the SMG-68 for a sellable price, would only piss off the existing owners of the SMG-68

Third, "re-releasing" something like that can cost tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, easily. To setup and re-tool those million dollar machines, packaging, marketing, labor costs, etc. And in the end, what are you left with? A poppet gun, that uses loseable clips, that uses CO2.

Unless they were able to pre-sell a few hundred of them, I don't see how in the world Tippmann would be willing to afford to bring that gun back. It just looks like bad news all the way around
