Nikon D50 (older camera that has been replaced by the D40X but it's still a good camera)
Nkon D60

$500-$600 depending on where you go.

PLENTY of reviews on all three of those.

thanks guys. here's what i bought last night

from craigslist
Canon Rebel Xs
Telephoto lense
back pack to carry it in.
tripod

all original boxes and such.

original want price: $650
but i gave my money to my dad because he is a CRAZY awesome negotiator. (its what he does for a job at a trucking company)
he got them down to $500.

GO DAD GO!!!!

also, i might add
craigslist is your friend because unlike ebay you
1. can go over to a house and actually look at/ test the product
2. no shipping charges.

:D

monopod is more manuverable,if you want a steady shot but will be moving around a lot then you would use a monopod, however if you camera will generally be in one location then you would use a tripod. basically sports photographers would use a monopod and portrait photographers would use a tripod... GENERALLY

For a gift I am getting my friend a new camera, he has recently recovered from being very sick and I feel obligated to get him a present.
The best bet at the moment seems to be the Nikon D80. Is there a better camera for that price, say maybe a Canon?
I'm kinda a newbie, but its something he really wants.
As for lenses, I don't have a set price range for that, but any reccomendations are fine.
My maximum for the camera itself is $550-600.

Thank you
-Andres

Whic of these cameras are better?:

Fujifilm FinePix S1500: http://www.futuresho...10120332&catid=

or Nikon CoolPix L100: http://www.futuresho...10121750&catid=

I am a newbie and will be shooting mostly nature/landscape photos, and the occasional family photo. I'm leaning towards the fujifilm because I held it in the store and it was very comfortable.
Which will take the picture sooner after the button is pressed?

I'd go with the Fujifilm. You said it's more comfortable. There is a delay from the time you press the shutter to when the shutter opens to take the picture.

Ah. I see. The delay is less than a second usually. I will double check the specs on the camera and compare them.

As for my question?

Get the D80. If that's what he wants. It's hard to give a better suggestion without knowing how active in photography he is, what type of photography he's interested in, lens budget, etc.

I went to the store, and they are both comfortable, but from what I've read the Nikon has a fixed ISO, and images come out soft, not as crisp, but it also has a higher zoom.

I wont make a decision for you, but here are some specs-

FujiFilm

CCD Sensor
10 Megapixels
12x zoom
ISO 64-6400
Video capability

Nikon

CCD Sensor
10.1 Megapixels
15x zoom
ISO 64-3200
No video

Based on these specs, I personally would go with the Nikon. You go with whatever one feels right to you.

The reason the pictures were soft is probably because of camera shake. If your shutter speed is low enough, it will catch the camera shake, thus making the picture look blurry/soft. If you bump up your ISO and turn your E/V comp. down a bit, you could get a faster shutter speed.

Nothing really. Your pictures will be very grainy. P&S style cameras aren't meant to go to super high ISO's.

Few things to definitely get-

1) SD Card (2GB is good)
2) Strap (if it doesn't come with one)
3) Screen protectors
4) Microfiber cleaning cloth
5) Extra battery if you can find it

That's all I can think of for now. Good luck with your purchase. Let me know if you have any more questions. PM me if you need anymore help.

I don't know anything about photography, but I'd like to start taking close-up highres pictures of my marker(s).

My budget would probably be around $300-400. Is that enough to take good closeup pictures or will I need to save some more?

Would I need to get a different camera to switch to action pics or would I just need a different lens?

Any help's appreciated :D

Success is my only mothafuckin' option, failure's not

Canon Rebel XT - $245
http://www.keh.com/P...50/DC02/FE.aspx

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 - $84
http://www.keh.com/P...9N/CE06/FE.aspx

50mm is a good focal length for markers so you'd be in good shape here.
