ok. so i started playing paintball seriously about 2 years ago and when i bought a Smart Parts ION from a friend of mine (its a launch ion, its 5 years old...it still works...its badass.) and i've always talked about the guns i wanted to buy as guns...then i was at my field one time last summer and some snot nosed 12 year old kid at my field says to me when i was in the middle of a conversation "its a marker, dumbass"....usually when a 12 year old insults me i take it with a grain of salt because its not cool for me to flip out at a child. but in all honesty and fairness...why do people have such a preference(?) when talking about "paintball firing devices"

some people get into such tantrums about GUNS VS MARKERS and i just wanted to see what the community thought about this. to me, their guns its not a huge deal. sure its not a fire-arm that shoots bullets...but it still projects them over a given area at a high rate of speed...its not a crayola washable coloring device.

Personally I don't care. I'll switch back and forth between them both. People that get pissed off at others for saying gun imo are idiots. Sure some just call it a marker to avoid the negativity behind the word gun. All up to the person

I switch between the two. I don't know why Posted Image

It doesn't matter to me since using the word "marker" doesn't seen to change paintball's image too much when I'm talking about it to my non-pb-playing friends. Marker, gun, they don't hear either of those words. All they hear is "paintball" and they have their own opinion already (fortunately it's a neutral opinion most of the time). To me, a term isn't going to improve, or harm paintball's image.
paintball will be paintball.

I'll always begin my participation by saying markers. It typically evolves into saying "gun" by whatever respective group/individual I'm speaking with anyway as more often than not, most people are relatively understanding that even though some of us like to play dress up and have a lovely mil-sim looking theme going on, at the end of the day, the "gun" in our hands still only shoots balls of goop.

To be hard nosed about it one way or another, however, is somewhat limiting to a productive conversation.

Pretty much like everyone else who has posted on here I use both. The only times I really try to call it a marker is when I'm talking to my mom because if I don't she will freak out.

Gun when at fields or talking to other paintballers.

Marker when explaining something to some non informed people.

But technically its an "air gun" Not a gun gun, but what ever.

I use gun when talking with fellow paintballers, and marker when talking with non-paintballers. Saying gun to the general public makes them way too nervous and jumpy, and makes them think even worse of paintball than they already do.

i take it the other way round, around ballers, i call it marker, cause they know what i mean. Around normal people, i call it a gun, cause when i tell them i spent 900 bucks on a marker they go "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattt?" then i have to spend 10 minutes telling them that's what we call a paintball gun and i'm not referring to the whiteboard writing device.

So i just make my life easier and tell them i own a gun and i shoot people...

I use the term marker when travelling across the boarder or flying, when I claim that I posses paintball gear and markers.

Don't wanna be like "Yeah I've got a gun..." to border or customs officers.
"I don't always shoot Spool Valves, but when I do, I prefer the Geo2" (The Most Interesting Man In The World)

"All the angles are at angles, there's a bumper inside the bumper, and the reg is completely air flow, flowing air faster in two different directions...and then they cross eachother. The bolt kinda like an Eclipse, it's just a keets-a-bobble. There's always varr-ubles, and you've gotta remember, uhh...there's always varr-ubles" (Bob Long in the G6R Video)

So can a hammer, but it generally is thought of for it's primary purpose.

I don't really care what people call it. Around parents and kids i try to use 'marker'.

woot woot +1 lol

ok how is it considered a gun because if gun = fire arm and fire=ignition then if you have no ignition I.e. gun powder then how is it a gun?

ok that out of the way. i work at a begginer field and play at a diff field when i go to play. mommy loves to here "marker" cuz when she spends $400 on her childs 11th b-day party she doesn't want to tell the other moms shes promoting violence and blah blah blah

either way you got ppl that are extremist so take your rationality out of it. they wanna ban video games and music cuz kids shoot up schools. and they wanna call us violent warrmongerers because we shoot and get "kills" so its mainly just some extremist gettin some attention

I like using the term marker for "formal" use, that is, untill i get some type of confirmation that the person with whom i'm conversing with has at least half a hamster brain I won't use the term gun. I try to downplay the "fires high speed projectiles" partt and emphasize the "semi-permanent coloration" part. Whatever you call it, it isn't what it is without both qualities.

It's a matter of political correctness, calling it a gun could be a turnoff to some people as well as gives ammo to people who would like to ban paintball. There are some psychologists (who have never played by the way) who think that playing paintball desensitizes the players to violence and makes it easier for us to commit a violent gun crime. Basically, "gun" can be a charged word, while "marker" is much more benign.

Its a paintball gun.

Marker comes from when paintball was originated when they used the guns to Mark cattle.

Since most people don't even understand the sport, they started calling them markers because paintball always gets a bad rep for "being too violent" and gun sounds like a bad thing to most people

Well I switch between both. I may say gun more often than marker, because thats what I always referred to them as before I was big into paintball.

Although I am very mindful of what I do say. Sometimes I will correct myself, or actively make a decision to say marker instead of gun. When talking with people who typically look down on paintball, I call it a marker. For example, I have been working with the local high school to let us play paintball inside the school before it is torn down, and when talking to them I always say marker.

Different words for different groups. Some people really look down on paintball, and using the term gun gives it a more violent image.

I use gun when talking with fellow paintballers, and marker when talking with non-paintballers. Saying gun to the general public makes them way too nervous and jumpy, and makes them think even worse of paintball than they already do.

Exactly, I always say "marker" so my mom doesn't start freaking out.
