Morning guys, long time no see.

Just thought I'd stop buy and say I had to sell my Porsche 968.
I then bought a 1984 944 which I'm building into a fun trackday/autocross ride. Also went through a few daylies('02 318i and '99 Passat 1.8T Wagon) but ended up with a '93 Prelude 2.3i as a daily.

So this thread is still going along I see.

i vitesse mafed my 944 turbo, m030 bars ... oh shes a new beast now.

very much liking it. god engine management in the 80s sucked.

its a sport compact, like a civic si, prelude si, etc.

none of those are sports cars either. a sport compact is a compact car, made faster. sports cars are typically bespoke chassis.

seriously, how is this confusing to anyone?

some ice fun (me driving the miata):

I'm a car guy man and a mechanic it's a forever if habit every day we argue about the best big block v8 in the shop. But you can live and love this works you living in bud. Your miata is totally a soprts car if it is to you but it's a roasder to everyone else with a brain including the people who made it as an echo of the British roadster. It's a damn good car none the less

as you have clearly demonstrated, there are plenty of "car guys" who don't understand these definitions either. in fact, i'd go out on a limb and say most guys who argue about big block v8s don't understand the nuance of a sport coupe vs a sports car. or a hot hatch from a sport compact. or a GT car from a super car. it happens.

i mean, you even tried to cite an srt4 as a sports car ... by ANYONE, who knows ANYTHING an srt4 isn't a sports car. haha.

either way, you asked why its so hard to buy american ... thats because they don't make a sports car. because i am interested in buying sports cars. not sport coupes, not muscle cars, not hot hatches, not GT cars .... sports cars. the pontiac solstice and saturn sky was the last and IMO tragically lost american sports car. i ahve actually been tempted to pick up a sky redline several times (i think they look better than the pontiac).

I don't know where you guys get off with roadsters being another word for sports cars... But they're not sports cars.

sports car
noun

  1. a low-built car designed for performance at high speeds.

The solstice was made to be a competitor to the Miata, it's not a sports car. Even the Solstice GXP barely hits the mark and you're talking to a Pontiac guy. Sorry but pony cars are a seperate breed of car entirely, they've never been a sub-cateory to muscle cars seeing that when ford made the Mustang it had nothing to do with the GTO, sure they evolved alittle and got bigger but that doesn't mean it's suddenly become a muscle car. Almost every car has become bigger in one way or another (Physically and/or power wise).

'88 Fiero - not made anymore, if there is anything more dead than the american sports car, its the affordable mid engined sports car - Point being... what? They're widely available and cheap.

any gen Vette - GT car - In no universe is one of the pioneers of sports cars a GT car, when it's nickname is "America's Sports car". It came out as a Sports car and will always be one even though it pushes super car territory.

Newer pony cars - not sports cars Fair game, but relevant alternatives.

Taurus SHO - DEAR LORD NOT A SPORTS CAR ehhhhhhh it's a stretch but keep in mine I'm talking about the 89-96 SHO.

T-Bird - THIS IS REALLY GETTING PETHETIC T-Bird is a damn good car, you sound pretty biased, maybe you automatically assume I'm talking about the land yaht T-Bird

SRT-4 (kinda) - KILL IT WITH FIRE - Bruh, you need to drive one lol

"F-body Camaros and Firebirds are bad cars." In what universe are late year F - Body's bad cars? That's just your Dodge fan boying showing Pred, "Dodge didn't have anything available sept the Viper, Camaro/Firebird = not good.

using layman's terms and a layman's dictionary, to justify your argument in a very niche community is pretty silly.

its not an insult to a car to not be a sports car. nor is a sports car a synonym for a fast car. there are plenty of very fast, very good cars, that arn't sports cars. thats why we have other terms for them. i didn't invent the definition of a sports car, its been defined in such a way since the post war British sports cars of the 1950s. sorry.

THAT'S A ROADSTER! You've literally defined a roadster

"Performance isn't important"

"Usually a convertible"

"2 Seater"

road·ster
ˈrōdstər/
noun

  1. an open-top automobile with two seats.

They are known as "Sporty cars" but they're roadsters. The dictionary is how the words are defined and how we talk about them in the trade, I'm a restoration apprentice I work with most of these cars and my teacher was sponsored by Porsche to come to Canada. I seriously know the difference between a Sports car and a Roadster. There's no secret definition between the two, in restoration a roadster is always british, and a sports car can be almost anything.

there are roadsters that are not sports cars. the audi TT is a perfect example.

do you simple not understand how to classify cars?

The audi TT is not a roadster, it's a sports car that's offered as a convertible. Roadsters are offered as only convertibles e.g miata, s2k, solstice, etc

nope ... audi TT roadster:

audi-tt-aud_tt_04_ro_32_1.jpg

a hopped up golf with tin snipers taken to it. its a roadster.

certainly isn't a sports car ahaha

also there are miata coupes. lol.

Shitty car, but none the less known as a sports car, is a hardtop, the convertible version is called the "Audi TT Roadster". we're not talking about newer miata's we're talking about the original miata's not the new versions which aren't true coupes because they come with a power retractable hard top hence convertible

again, quoting the nameless faceless morons who also don't know the definition of a sports car, from that of a sports coupe, or GT car, or super car, or hot hatch, or whatever ... is not a point in your favor.

EDIT: never understood why folks get all hot and bothered about this. its a pretty simple matter of definitions.

i think its cause folks get insecure when you call there cars, not sports cars. why this bothers them, i don't know.
