The only good diet pills I have found are Alli. What they do I prevent your body from absorbing the fat in your food. Once you take it for a couple days you will see where that fat goes and its really gross. They are fda approved and thus in theory should not be harmfull.
I would just suck it up and run anyway. Its gets easier each time you do it. Sure you don't notice it, but eventually you can breath eaisier, and then your speed picks up, then you get fewer cramps. The next thing you know, you have lost alot more weight then you thaught you would and that motivates you even more.
I have been doing this for 2 weeks running every day and taking these pills and have lost about 13lbs. I attribute 99% of that to the running. I don't think the pills are hurting though and are probably doing more then I know.

Are those pills basically getting you to shit lard?

Bingo. Dont eat more than the allowable amount of fat per meal though. Bad things will happen....I know a lady who shat herself in her desk at work.

Diet pills do not work how they say they do. The only one maybe worth buying is Ally...but if you do not follow the directions be prepared to shit your brains out. plus its insanely expensive.

If you arent willing to put out some money for the gym running/jogging will be the best. Or you could hook yourself up to an 18 wheeler and go rocky style...

if you can get into a gym, spin bike/stationary bikes are great, as well as the elliptical (300 to 600 calories per 30 minutes depending on how hard you work). both are great work outs and low impact ( if that is an issue for you). with the economy the way it is, most gyms are dropping their costs. You can find them for 20 to 30 dollars a month, which I think is pretty reasonable...about how much you would pay for those pills ;)
